Washington Times: Israel plotting strike on Iran
Iran option

A former Navy intelligence officer weighs in on how the world will stop Iran from building nuclear bombs:

"I really believe the Israelis are going to strike several uranium processing factories soon. They cannot survive a first strike. This time, unlike when they sent eight F-16s to destroy the Iraqi reactor Osirak, I think they will use the Jericho missiles and the submarine-launched, nuclear-tipped Tomahawks to do nuclear strikes. Most of the factories are 150 meters underground and too deep for bunker busters."

5. there is no way
the Israelies would use nukes first.

That would be utterly and absolutely stupid.

Even the US wouldnt be able to support them on that and Israel would know that all hell would break lose if they did they.

Conventional strikes maybe, but nuclear? no way no how.

7. It would be the death of Israel if they did. Morally, politically and
militarily. The collective Arabs could actually walk to Israel and overpower the country after massive suicide march casualities, but eventually the bullets and bombs would run out.

While most Arab states aren't too friendly with Iran, they are still brother Muslims, even if they are Persians...and Shiites.

8. The US would support them 100%
and probably follow them into hell dragging all of us with them. IIRC from my entimer/fundy days its supposed to come down to the US and Israel VS Everyone else. Get your seat now in the valley of Megiddo

Ironically, according to Revelations
Two superpowers, having destroyed a series of other nations, will duke it out over the Middle East. The one that wins will have conquered Syria. The Antichrist will turn out to be working for that superpower.

to RaptureReady.com and join up with those wacko fundies. They are salivating over the possibility of a war with Iran. Because then Jesus will come and zap them all up to heaven.

14. We have hundreds of thousands of troops in the crossfire
and you think that would not be a cue for Bush? They could spin invasion as a humanitarian mission and self-defense. But this WT balloon is hardly credible. In the past, despite their ties to the secretive WH their reporting has been shallow and for propaganda only. It makes news when they SEEM to have an inside scoop. As much likelihood for someone to approach Paula Zahn. The kind of shallow wonkish readership they have probably means an ordinary op-ed has been submarined into a "source".

Second guessing as to how Bush will hit Syria and Iran(Israel has been severely rebuffed because of Lebanon) is legitimate because it is so insane. Hard to think of a practical strategy that isn't simply war for the sake of war. The recent military criticism stems from the WH not utilizing the simplest realistic plans in Iraq and no one is probably listening to anything sane, legal or workable now either, but it is closeted simply for being outside the real military establishment.

Contrariwise, Bush Sr. used the set reliable and clever military plans in the first Gulf War. One idiot general even guessed correctly on TV that we would make a sea landing feint and then go overland and after securing Kuwait, quitting. Luckily that didn't effect the war at all since in any event the Iraqis were helpless.

Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 12:34 PM by roamer65
two years ago. Long enough ago for them to adapt their nukes to fit on them. We sold them hundreds of bunker busters just before the '04 election if I remember correctly. I remember a news blurb on it.

10. Pretty chancy to do that. They didn't do so well in Lebanon.
Maybe this article is "pre-emptive" to get info out to stop it if Israel is thinking about doing this.

16. The Times answers Nothing. The real question is
what will Israel sacrifice first to justify using nukes?

They were hoping to goad Hezbollah into using WMDs and failed so now they need to stage something...

21. They are desparate to get the US involved NOW. It is their last
chance before the PNAC Crime Family implodes and before the US loses their primacy on the world stage. We will not be the Superpower much longer. Our time is over. No other country on earth will support them. This is their very last chance. They may go for it.

22. And you know this how?
As I pointed out before, the OP's thread title is completely misleading. In other words, he made it up out of whole cloth. The article says nothing about Israel plotting anything. It quotes a US military officer who claims that he believes the Israelis might strike Iran. He asserts this without claiming any sources.

17. Congratulations: You are the grand winner of the misleading
OP award, and you richly deserve it. The Washington Times asserts nothing remotely like what you did; that Israel is plotting to attack Iran. It is the opinion of one naval officer, who know where says he has an inside information, that Israel may conduct a first strike.

Inappropriate. Not mention dishonest.

19. Troubling if true
I'm Jewish and attend a synagogue here in town (although I was bad and missed Yom Kippur). I also have close friends in the local ADL. You should have heard the murmurs of disagreement and discontent among local Jews when we (Israel) entered Lebanon. The deaths of Lebanese civilians disturbed many Jews, and we seemed to unilaterally feel that the killing of children as revenge was not only inhumane but essentially un-Jewish. My rabbi took the hardline position at the local J-center's Support For Israel rally (which I attended), and during Shabbat services he all but demanded we take as strong a stance as he did. Many folks at shul were kind of alienated by that (they're thinking of replacing him anyway). Oneg was full of murmuring and outrage about Israel's activities against Lebanon. It was a tense summer.

I support the survival of Eretz Israel, but if the comments of fellow Jews I was around and talked with at all the required things this past summer are any indication, Israel may find herself standing alone if she continues to take unilateralist aggressive actions against her neighbors, regardless of Hamas provocations. People were refusing to send donations to the usual Israel support funds! I was shocked! But the collective (and correct) feeling is, murder is un-Jewish. It just is. We're a people of thought, not violence. We collectively realize we know better than adopting the violence of our former and present enemies. At the same time, there is a collective sigh and shrug of, "What else can we do? They've forced us to this." So the deadlock and inner conflict about this dilemma continue, for lots of Jews, and for me as just little me. I'm facing that same dilemma in whether it's time to bear arms and rise up against this government. When is the line crossed? When does violence become okay? For self-defense? For an ideal? For liberty?

I can answer that question when it comes to Israel: only under extreme provocation, and only as defense.

It is tougher to answer it when it comes to preventing a fascist right takeover of America. This one I want to get a rifle and start fighting for now. So I am very conflicted.

PS, if anyone visits my profile, see that I have light brown skin, and wonder "How on earth can she be Jewish?", I invite you to visit the Jews of Color website. I am in fact ethnically Jewish. My mother's ancestors were partly Jewish going almost all the way back through Portugal to India. The term for us is Sephardim. L'shana tovah.
