Who had a good post-presidency and who had the worst?
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 09:58 PM by cynatnite
When Reagan left office he was really confined by his disease and was never able to do much afterwards. When Carter left office he did 'Habitat for Humanity' and managed to win a Nobel Peace Prize. After Clinton's term he has managed to raise over $7 billion in three days for his global initiative.

I'm not sure if Nixon did manage to have a legacy better than his presidency...it'd be harder than hell to overcome that anway. It did seem like he slowly became better respected. I didn't pay much attention.

Ford...I don't remember much. He played golf a lot.

I realize bush sr. and Clinton teamed together with the tsunami and Katrina disasters, but it occured to me tonight that without Clinton, he wouldn't have gotten much. People despise his son so much that they needed Clinton to help stave off the critisisms to give the appearance of bipartisanship. In other words, they used Clinton...but I'm sure Big Dog doesn't mind since it was for a good cause.

Now, is it just me or am I crazy...but it's been over 14 years since bush sr. left office. Other than a charity here and there, it doesn't seem as if he's done anything near Carter or Clinton.

A repug thing? Probably.

So far, IMO, Carter has had the best post-presidency. Clinton could surpass him. Of the worst...my vote goes to bush sr.

1. I am predicting that Little George will have a truly hellacious
post-presidency. If there is a remaining shred of justice in the universe he will spend at least some of it in the dock at The Hague.

2. Gerald Ford played a lot of golf. And none of his kids ruined the
country. That's pretty good for a repub ex-president. :)

4. Nixon's wasn't very pretty.
Of the ones I knew of...

One of the better ones was Herbert Hoover who was a fixture at Republican Conventions for years. Truman continued to give people hell for the rest of his life. Ike was okay, but nothing to rave about. LBJ disappeared to his ranch where he grew his hair long and scowled at people (I suppose). Ford played golf. Reagan got alzheimers. Bush I?--Who knows.

I agree Jimmie is one of the best. Clinton is doing some good stuff.

BTW, Taft became a SCOTUS justice!! That's pretty damned good.

5. Hoover wasn't just partisan, he chaired a comsn to reform gov't agencies
The Hoover Commission was the Gore Task Force of its day--appointed by Democrat Harry Truman, the Hoover Commission streamlined hundreds of functions of the executive branch and White House and made the bureaucracy work harder to serve the country. Hoover, for all his faults, was the last Republican president to give an honest damn about trying to run the government within a fixed, responsible budget.
