White House journalist Helen Thomas to speak in Salt Lake City at free event

Posted: 12:58 PM- She's the grand dame of White House journalism, known for asking tough questions from the front row of press briefings as well as for her trademark string of pearls.
On Saturday, journalist Helen Thomas will speak at Rowland Hall-St. Mark's McCarthey Campus Saturday in a free event open to the public. The event, to be held at 7 p.m. in the dining hall of the private school at 970 E. 800 South in Salt Lake City, inaugurates the McCarthey Family Lecture Series.
For 57 years, Thomas served as White House correspondent for United Press International (UPI), blazing trails for women in journalism as she covered presidents beginning with John F. Kennedy. She is now a syndicated columnist with Hearst Newspapers.
Thomas attended public schools in Detroit and graduated from Wayne State University. She began her journalism career at the Washington Daily News as a copy girl and joined UPI in 1943.
Thomas wrote radio news and covered federal government early in her career until 1960, when she began covering President-elect Kennedy. She went on to cover the administrations of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Thomas has written three books. Her most recent title is "Thanks for the Memories Mr. President: Wit and Wisdom from the Front Row at the White House."

fanning the flickering flame of freedom and democracy for so long to keep it burning in one corner of DC. I always look forward to her fearlessly enjoining the dark forces in battle. She's a warrior goddess. Love that woman!
