Did Democrats Page Mark Foley?

Ibd
Mon Oct 2, 7:00 PM ET

Scandal: Right after Mark Foley was revealed to have had inappropriate e-mail conversations with a 16-year-old page, he resigned and checked into rehab. Now, what did Democrats know, and when did they know it?

Yes, you read that right: the Democrats. It's of course clear that Foley, a Republican representative from Florida, resigned for good cause. We don't defend him or his inexcusable behavior -- good riddance.

But it didn't take long at all after Foley's resignation for the Democrats to call for an investigation of the entire Republican leadership in the House, charging that GOP stalwarts knew early on that Foley, as they like to say in the rehab business, had a "problem."

Democrats have begun losing their once-significant lead in the polls, and a mere five weeks remain until the midterm elections. Is this scandal the Democrats' own "October Surprise," meant to throw the GOP into a tailspin shortly before the vote?

This is Fresh off Rove's Fax Machine

I heard several callers into Progressive Talk radio shows spouting the same talking points this afternoon.

This is a vulgar Rovian mind F&@k that is taking place here.

Who in God's name wrote this piece of drivel??

Yahoo?

6. They mention Studds. but they don't mention Dan Crane

On July 14, 1983 the House Ethics Committee concluded that Rep. Dan Crane (R-Ill.) and Rep. Gerry Studds (D-Mass.) had engaged in sexual relationships with minors, specifically 17-year-old congressional pages. In Crane's case, it was a 1980 relationship with a female page and in Studds's case, it was a 1973 relationship with a male page. Both representatives immediately pleaded guilty to the charges and the committee decided to simply reprimand the two.

However, Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) demanded their expulsion. On July 20, 1983 the House voted for censure, the first time that censure had been imposed for sexual misconduct. Crane, who subsequently apologized for his transgression, lost his bid for reelection in 1984.

Studds, however, stood by the facts of the case and refused to apologize for his behavior, and even turned his back and ignored the censure being read to him. He called a press conference with the former page, in which both stated that the young man, who was 17, consented. Studds had taken the adolescent to Morocco to engage in sexual activity, and therefore did not break any U.S. laws in what he called a "private relationship."<1> He continued to be reelected until his retirement in 1996.<2>

8. It's probably the best they can do
I think the idea is not to convince the average person, it is to give the blindly faithful some basis for sticking with the program. It's the same phenomenon we see when, no matter what the issue or problem, they somehow can blame Bill Clinton. We laugh, but it is just the life-raft that kool-aid drinkers need to rationalize the delusional loyalty to which they have so much invested. "The war in Iraq is in shambles." "Yes but... Bill Clinton cut the military down to 5 guys!"
I hate to tell them, but the average person doesn't have a clue what "October Surprise" even means. They do, however, know a pervert when they see one. This kind of inside baseball, blame the Democrats spin is strictly for the dittoheads. There is blood in the water.

9. The answer is no
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 10:01 AM by Tempest
ABC correspondent Brian Ross dismissed suggestions by some Republicans that the news was disseminated as part of a smear campaign against Mr. Foley.

"I hate to give up sources, but to the extent that I know the political parties of any of the people who helped us, it would be the same party," Mr. Ross said, referring to Republicans.

10. I only WISH..
the Dems had the ball or had the mendacity to "page" anybody.

I've always believed Monica was part of a carefully planned program to burn Clinton. Considering that Rove and the other mini-Machiavellians in the Repub party, that's not too far fetched.

To believe that the Dems burned Foley is to ignore Dems past - and current - behavior.
