I am a Wisconsin resident as well as a retired high school American History teacher.
This is the proverbial "tipping point" in that he will replace a relatively moderate conservative.
Given the current one-party rule, the effect will last long after more judicious heads prevail.
After living and teaching through the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam upheaval, Nixonian Imperial Presidency, Civil Rights and on and on, I have NEVER feared for our republic as I do now.
From Alito's loony "unitary executive" theory, and the "signing statement' idea which abrogates Congressional intention, this nomination will have a lasting and very detrimental on our representative government. And this doesn't even touch on the current executive branch's warrantless wiretapping, outsourcing of torture, unbridled secrecy - all in the name of "wartime executive powers."
By his own confirmation hearings, he has presaged his consent to such practices -- and this is in addition to the probable impact of diluting Roe to virtual non-existence.
It doesn't even matter if a filibuster would succeed - the point is that HISTORY will record who at least REALLY TRIED to save our Republic.
This is THE most important action you may take in your Senatorial service.
Sincerely,
