US rice kept out of Britain because of GM contamination
John Vidal, environment editor
Saturday September 30, 2006
The Guardian

American rice which may have been contaminated with a controversial GM strain has been effectively blocked from the UK, it emerged yesterday.
The world's biggest importer of rice has said it has ceased trading in US-grown rice because of fears about the GM variety, which has not been approved for human use.

<snip>

In a separate move, the US department of agriculture yesterday said it was helping Bayer to fast track retroactive approval for the rice so it could be consumed by humans.

<snip>

...the escalating row, which now extends to Japan, has resulted in the virtual collapse of the US rice industry as countries have imposed bans and US rice farmers file lawsuits against Bayer.

4. I wish agrotech would make up their mind
Either GM food is

A) so different from the real thing that they deserve patent protection, OR

B) so much like the real thing that there is no need to do safety studies on it or tell the public it's in food.

Logic says it can't be both, but that's exactly what ADM and Monsanto have strong-armed the FDA into saying. Other than maybe the DEA, I can't think of a Federal agency that's more grossly failing at its job.

7. Just remember - nothing the food industry has done in the last 100 years
has been for the benefit of the consumer. They've screwed up our food enough so that no one is eating food anymore.
