80-19 Senate Approves Putting Expensive Fence Around The United States
US Congress approves 700-mile (1,100-kilometer) fence for US-Mexico border
The Associated Press

Published: September 29, 2006
WASHINGTON The Senate has passed and sent to President George W. Bush a bill authorizing 700 new miles (1,100 kilometers) of fencing on the U.S.-Mexico border as a deterrent to illegal immigration, just weeks before congressional elections.

The 80-19 vote Friday night was among the senators' final tasks before leaving to campaign ahead of Nov. 7 elections. The fence bill was passed by the House of Representatives two weeks ago.

The fence would cover one-third of the border. No one knows how much it will cost, but a separate bill also on the way to the White House makes a $1.2 billion (€950 million) down payment on it. A 14-mile (23-kilometer) segment of fence under construction in San Diego is costing $126.5 million (€100 million).

In addition to money for starting work on the fence, a homeland security bill passed Friday by the House and later by the Senate includes $380 million (€300 million) to hire 1,500 more Border Patrol agents and money to build detention facilities to hold 6,700 more illegal immigrants until they can be deported.

9. I'm confused.
Are we fencing ourselves in or the rest of the world out?

We've got gunboats playing war games in the Great Lakes, effectively militarizing that part of the border with Canada and we're planning all these fences along the northern and southern borders.

Yet, at the very same time, I'm reading about the super-secret, corporate-run _NAU (North American Union)_ that's planning to effectively merge Canada/US/Mexico.

It can't be both ways, can it? So which is it?

11. Ah but the crux of the matter
is that the checkpoints will allow goods to come from the South and capital will flow freely while keeping out the people whose land and goods are being stolen by el Norte'.

Not to mention all the security slush fund contracts. Armed madhouse.

12. Then it's not modeled on the EU, is it?
It would be strictly corporation-controlled armed camps and institutionalized slavery.

14. Jeez, this is the dumbest thing ever!
Who thought of this lame-brained idea? Why don't we just put a bubble over the country just in case anyone decides to parachute in? I can't believe anyone honestly thinks this will work!!
