Foley's opponent is a temporary "dem" fundy businessman
whose company is under investigation for fraud.

per front page of today's palm beach post

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/search/content/nation/epaper/2006/09/30/s1a_mahoney_0930.html

mahoney's been a "democrat" for two years

the thugs probably wanted mahoney in, and decided to throw foley to the wolves. mahoney's their kind
of whackjob

1. Given the choice between a corrupt businessman, and a pedophile ...
I'll take the businessman. We can (eventually) fix the problems that they cause. We can't repair the damage done to children who are victimized by the powerful.

Sorry to say, but this brand of corruption is not limited to Republicans. It just happens to be more prevalent.

22. That's truly depressing.
To have those two as the only choices is like having the choice to jump off of a cliff to keep from being burned alive in a fire.

2. Well, from what I've been seeing around here the (D) is all that
matters, torture fans, DINOS, fundies, fine as long as they have that (D)-that's what folks are saying. Principle must be sacrificed for expediency and we must be pragmatic, that's what people say here.

3. If he doesn't vote the way the whip tells him to, he's a one-termer
And we're still better off with a difficult person holding the seat than NO ONE holding it.

4. Remember the Math...
More Democrats than Republicans in the House...Democrats run (RULE) the agenda. Mr. Mahoney, fundy though he may be, will NOT rule the agenda.
I wouldn't vote for him in a primary, but he'll do for now.

7. Bingo...This Is A Bigger Picture
Rahm Emanuel found this guy cause he thought he could give Foley problems. And this is all about head count. We need 16 House seats to take control...it doesn't matter if its a bleeding-heart liberal or a fundie wingnut as long as they cast a vote for Pelosi or whomever is nominated as speaker and the chairmanships turn over to folks like John Conyers and Henry Waxman.

One of my saddest days was seeing Gephart hand that gavel to Gnewt in '95. I knew then our worst nightmares were just beginning. For once I sense some sunshine starting to break through the clouds.

Cheers...

10. A 2008 Netroots Target
On Nov. 8th...or after the dust settles...then let's look at whose doing what and where. If Democrats take control of the House and we see DINOs and others too happy to "cross over" then we'll really know who our true friends are and work on getting Progressive candidates. First things first...one less Repugnican seat, one step closer to forcing our voice to finally be heard.

Cheers...

6. Mahoney won't vote for Hastert
for speaker of the House. That is very important.

I read the story at the link you gave and I don't think you are correct in your assumption that the Repubs threw Foley to the wolves in order to get Mahoney in. That theory doesn't make any sense because the Repubs have never minded having a hypocrite in office. Also the story about Foley will hurt Republicans in other close races. The only response Repubs have given is that Foley is the same as Barney Frank and Bill Clinton. I don't think that response will win them votes.

15. oh, i know the thugs aren't concerned with morality or hypocrisy
they'll keep even obvious criminals in as long as they are "profitable" so to speak

i just found the timing interesting - right before the election like this. since the story's been
around for a year, seems they could've gotten someone new in there long ago.

i'm not very good at playing chess, i'm afraid. i didn't see the silver lining in this until i checked
the thread, so i'm grateful for that!

13. "Recruited by Democratic strategists".
They couldn't find a real Dem. Only a RW fundie corporate corrupt Reagan Republican with a sudden D could run. But it's ok. It's a D on the ballot.

Is there no MENSCH to step up to the plate as the designated hitter?

18. You mean Rahm thought he was conservative enough that he fit what
he and the DLC were looking for? Run a DINO against Foley so it would be competition. Now Foley is dead so the DINO is considered a shrewd pick...

I can understand the logic ...but if this guy has bad business practices then then Foley (who must remain on the ballot) might actually WIN although his "surrogate" serves.

Yikes...not good to be caught in boxes.

But I don't think we could have pulled that off in this district even with the Foley boy-toy stories.

20. That district is gerrymandered for Republicans, currently.
It would *never* be in play otherwise. Think of this seat as a freebie.
