Kennedy up for re-election, even if campaign is not apparent

By Glen Johnson, AP Political Writer | September 29, 2006
BOSTON --An old saying in politics is that a week is a lifetime. That must make 12 years an eon.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy is up for re-election this fall, but if you didn't see his name atop the Democratic ballot on Primary Day, there'd be a good chance you wouldn't know it.
Less than six weeks from Election Day, one of strongest, most capable election machines in American political history has yet to kick out a TV commercial.

Kennedy staffers say they have been doing the bulk of their campaign work behind the scenes, laying the foundation for a grassroots voter turnout effort that will benefit not only the senator, but Democratic gubernatorial nominee Deval Patrick and legislative candidates.

Just last week, Kennedy headlined a fundraiser at which he coaxed the congressional delegation to donate $600,000 to the Democrats' coordinated campaign for offices up and down the ticket.
The public phase kicks in next week, when the senator is freed from legislative business in Washington and can campaign back home.

He puts the people's interest before his own
Thank you Senator Kennedy
