torture bill passage makes international news
Both major German TV stations had reports about the Senate passage of this controversial bill during their evening news casts. The reports spoke of human rights groups and the majority of the democratic opposition condemning the bill as an invitation to torture, and a civil rights violation. A few of our Dem senators were mentioned by name, and clips were shown of their speeches on the senate floor.
The report also states that the bill is unlikely to make it past the Supreme Court because many parts of it are unconstitutional.
Below are two articles from the two major TV news stations. Links to the videos can also be found on the pages. Unfortunately, it's all in German.
I'd be curious to find out where else in Europe/world this bill passage has gotten mention. Anybody?

2. Here's Babel Fish's translation
The USA: Away freely
for disputed
Anti-terror law
Critic: Free ticket for "alternative" methodmethod methods

US president Bush brought his disputed anti-terror law by the congress. Now it must sign it only, so that it enters into force. The law permits the US government to place presumed terrorists before military tribunals instead of before civilian courts. It forbids "cruel and uncommon" punishments. Which is to be understood by it, is however not exactly fixed. Human rights activists and parts of the opposition criticized, the law throw the USA around centuries back.
29.09.2006

Also the senate the project approved of one day to the house of representatives on Thursday. The senators were correct with 65 to 34 voices for the law.

The verabschiedung is considered as victory to Bush before the lining up congress choice. Also about a dozen of democrats was correct with the republican majority in the senate. Bush had recruited a "necessary tool" in the morning again personally before the senators for the reform project and the law in the fight against the terrorism had called. "one may not forget that there is still an enemy, who wants the USA bad", said Bush in the senate.

The reform was necessary, after the highest Court of Justice at the end of of June with the military special tribunals had explained a central component of the anti-terror politics of Bush for illegal. In a basic judgement the judges classified tribunals for the sentence of terror-suspicious in the camp Guantánamo on Cuba as illegal.

Torture door and gate opened?

The American citizen right union criticizes the law as "drastic backward step for the human rights". That the minority leader in the senate, Harry Reid, warned of dangers for the US soldiers abroad. Bush legend, the USA did not permit torture, "however the text permit it to the president to lay our obligations out again and limit control of the Judikative, endanger our troops in the field".

According to the new law military committees so mentioned are to be formed after the model of the forbidden special tribunals. The terror-suspicious can be defended before the military judge by a lawyer, while so far none got several hundred prisoners the procedure legal in Guantánamo. The law forbids a "cruel, inhuman or down-appreciating" treatment to that suspecting - however they cannot insert redresses against their prison conditions. Critics accuse Bush to issue the army thereby a free travel light for their notorious "alternative" methodmethod methods.

"alternative" methods admitted

Bush had recently admitted that the US secret service CIA terror-suspicious in secret prisons cross-examines. Are used methodmethod methods designated of the US government as "alternatively". Human rights activists accuse to the USA that behind the term practices hide themselves, which fall under the torture prohibition.

7. Thanks for posting that.
A couple of things stood out in the translation.

"The verabschiedung is considered..." I don't speak German but I take it that "verabschiedung" translates to "horrendous pile of shit" or something similar. ;)

It also said that Bush had recruited a "necessary tool." Any idea who the tool was? ;)

Nice to know that somewhere the media is paying attention to this. Too bad it couldn't have happened here.

9. "Verabschiedung" means "Saying goodbye" or "Leaving Behind"
Basically, that the Bush Administration is saying goodbye to human rights and throwing us back to the turn of the century...100AD to be specific....

3. The only place to get Fair and Balanced American news is OUTSIDE America.
Nice that there are some news organizations giving both sides of the story.

4. Thank you for posting this
It's nice to see what our friends are saying in Europe and it's actually comforting to know that the world understands that there is opposition to Bush and his immoral views in the US. Sometimes I think we are a pariah in the eyes of the world and that we will never get over what Bush has done to this nation. It's nice to know that the other side does get coverage in non-US media.

6. Political asylum anyone?
I never thought I'd see the day that I feared my own government torturing me without recourse. That used to be what the little blue passport was good for..getting home..and now..it's for getting out.

12. Funny how their press knows it's unconstitutional and our press and
Congress Critters (most of them) don't.
