I just joined the ACLU.
Thank you for your decision to stand up for freedom by joining the American Civil Liberties Union.

Through the years, the key to our success and our greatest source of strength has always been the support of ACLU members who understand our freedoms can never be taken for granted - they must be vigorously defended or they will surely be lost. Look for your ACLU membership card in the mail and please consider asking your friends to join with you in supporting our work.

I am glad to know that you share our commitment to defending freedom. I pledge to you the best efforts of everyone at the ACLU as we work together to protect liberty.

Sincerely,

Anthony D. Romero
Executive Director
American Civil Liberties Union
125 Broad Street, 18th Floor
New York, NY 10004-2400

Now I'm going to join Amnesty International. :patriot:

1. Good for you!
I'm thinking of joining. Money is just super tight right now. But I've always wanted to be a dreaded (hehe) "card carrying menmber" of the ACLU.

7. You can join for ten bucks.
Eat beans for a few days.

Quit smoking.

Forego that overpriced, fancy coffee.

The ACLU is more important. They're the ones who will bring suits against all the unconstitutional garbage the GOP Congress is trying to do.

4. Congratulations! I've been a member for years.
Donate whatever you can, whenever you can. They are one of the few effective organizations standing between us and the loss of the constitution.

9. I thought it was important after yesterday.
The organization could be labeled however Bush sees fit, quite possibly.

5. I have never understood the slur about being a card carrying ACLU
member. I agree with Michael Douglas' character in American President when he was asked if he was. He said yes and then asked the questioner, why aren't you? It supports the first Amendment (among other things) and I can't understand how conservatives can make this a bad thing

6. Probably because it threatens them -
it impedes their goal of complete control. And the UCLA will defend anyone regardless of who they are, if their constitutional rights have been impeded.

18. They can't stand it that the ACLU defends EVERYONE
From murderers to the average Joe Q. Public, the ACLU believes EVERYONE deserves to have their rights protected. The right-wingers can't stand that.

Your post and the bullshit from yesterday was the kick I needed to finally join - I am not a joiner of much of anything because of some warped sense of independance, but I now am a formal (paid) member of 6 organizations.

my credit union
my local community radio station (KXCI 91.3 FM Tucson)
a local watershed group (CWA - the Benson subwatershed of the San Pedro River)
DemocraticUnderground
the Democratic Party
the ACLU

edit to fix count - guess I need to find a self help math group to join?

20. Just renewed my membership.
For those who don't know, as little $20.00, about half a tank of gas, is all it takes to become a card carrying member.

24. People for the American Way and Americans United for Separation of Church
and State also do a good job of fighting the right.

Thinking of joining all four as soon as I can scrape up the bucks... (our PFAW membership lapsed a little while back)
