"In darkest night, the stars shine brightest." All stars post here.
September 28, 2006 was a dark day in our history. Our elected representatives gave unwarranted power to George Bush while shredding three of the greatest documents in human rights: The United States Constitution, the Geneva Conventions, and the Magna Carta. A dictatorship was enabled, and all Bush has to do is declare it. We see this threat for what it is for, yet our elected officials do not. In our souls, we feel the night-tide creeping over us.

Now, however, is not the time to give in to despair and disappointment. Now, more than ever, we must stand strong for all that we know is right with America. We, my fellow Americans, are the lights in the dark. We must lead the way back. Shine.

2. Shine
shine
i heard her sing
i need a voice given anything
all i want to dream
flattery
days that never come
to shine a light on the damage done
somedays without a sound
i feel the dark even closer now
i wear it
a winter coat
i'm far away but not far enough
what's true is torn
and shouted down
the world's at my feet
and it turns when i speak
and it shines
shine and all that is
comes down upon me
shine and all that is
sleep, it never comes
i lay awake
all the shutters drawn
look at me i'm shamed
my bottle done
i hear her beating down on dirty wings
i feel the room move under me
i'm far away but not far enough
what's true is torn
and out of place

the world's at my feet
and it turns when i speak
and it shines
shine
i heard her sing
a crooked voice and a dirty wings
beating under me
flattery
the world's at my feet
and it turns when i speak
on its drums and its wheels
shine
shine and all that is
comes down upon me
shine and all that is
comes down upon me
shine and all that is
comes down upon me

4. Here...
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering.
There is a crack in everything,
That's how the light gets in.

9. And a salute right back atcha!
No, I won't give up. I have two little boys that have to live to see a better day in this Republic.

I will shine for my sons' sake, and by leading my family, friends, and coworkers to that place. Everyone I know who is aware of what our Congress did yesterday is terribly afraid, and I cannot waver in keeping their hopes alive.

NGU. Thanks to all stars who post here.

7. this star shines again..for us to learn and take our liberty back..
it is our responsibility to "own" our liberty and our democracy..we must fight to keep it or we will lose it forever...history is our greatest teacher..

"To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race."
Coolidge, Calvin 30th president (1923-1929)

"I would rather belong to a poor nation that was free than to a rich nation that had ceased to be in love with liberty."
Wilson, Woodrow 28th President of the United States

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves, and, under a just God, cannot long retain it."
Lincoln, Abraham

"Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel in order to be tough."
Roosevelt, Franklin Delano

"We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization."
Roosevelt, Franklin Delano

"Only free peoples can hold their purpose and their honor steady to a common end and prefer the interest of mankind to any narrow interest of their own."
Wilson, Woodrow

James Earl Carter, Jr.
"The best way to enhance freedom in other lands is to demonstrate here that our democratic system is worthy of emulation."

"Our American values are not luxuries but necessities—not the salt in our bread, but the bread itself. Our common vision of a free and just society is our greatest source of cohesion at home and strength abroad—greater than the bounty of our material blessings."

"We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles."

John Quincy Adams
"Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost."

William Henry Harrison (1841)
"But I contend that the strongest of all governments is that which is most free."

Abraham Lincoln (1861–1865)
"Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?"

Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1877–1881)
"Nothing brings out the lower traits of human nature like office seeking."

"He serves his party best who serves the country best."

Theodore Roosevelt (1901–1909)
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."
