Michaelmas !
Today -- in fact, September 29 every year -- is Michaelmas.

Michaelmas is the feast of Archangel Michael.

That is worthy of note in GD, I feel, only because Michael is a spiritual archetype held in high esteem by Christians, Jews and Muslims. He represents and symbolizes common ground for three religious groups that find so much to disagree about.

I read about Michaelmas at the bottom of this page for Odyssey of the 8th Fire
http://www.8thfire.net/Day_99.html

And I felt some other folks might like to know about it as well, since there seems otherwise to be so little in the way of common ground.

So hip hip hooray for Michaelmas.

1. Thanks for posting something uplifting &
HAPPY MICHAELMAS TO YOU SpiralHawk !!!

I just saw a hawk out my window so you have a friend in my neighborhood. :)

A unifying truly humanistic spiritulity is more than likely the only solution we have for all this intractable dualism IMHO.

I especially liked this.

" Michaelmas is
common ground upon which human beings are at
liberty to devise new expressions of festival that
may help answer the spiritual needs of our evolving multi-demensional global culture. Archangel Michael is said to aid in opening paths to spirit so that women and men might walk forward on those pathways not out of fear or coercion, but rather out of their own intelligence and free will. Michael reminds us that we can reckon directly with spirit, and require no priestly intermediary."

(sorry the formatting is all messed up)

2. 9/29 every year is also Divernancymas (my b-day!)
So when I was a little kid, St. Michael was my "patron saint". I had really forgotten about him until your post - and I read the whole link.

I see Michael as the anti-Bush. Michael symbolizes free-will, anti-materialism, & with his sword confronting and cutting away what is ferocious, malicious, toxic and demeaning (i.e. the Bush administration) to the human spirit.

"Archangel Michael is said to aid in opening paths to spirit so that women and men might walk forward on those pathways not out of fear or coercion, but rather out of their own intelligence and free will. Michael reminds us that we can reckon directly with spirit, and require no priestly intermediary."

There you have it: "fear or coercion"/the GOP way, versus "intelligence and free will"/DU.

8. St Michael's prayer
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.
