Sen. Burns, Tester debate in Montana
snip...

BUTTE, Mont. - U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns (news, bio, voting record) accused his Democratic challenger Saturday of wanting to raise taxes and weaken the U.S. Patriot Act, but brushed off allegations of ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Jon Tester, locked in a tight race with the three-term incumbent, blasted Burns during their debate for running up the federal deficit and claimed he has lost touch with Montana.

They also disagreed sharply on the U.S. Patriot Act. Burns said it is needed to intercept calls placed to known terrorist phone numbers and gives law enforcement the same tools they use to fight organized crime.

"I don't think Mr. Tester understands this enemy," Burns said. "We cannot afford another 9/11. I can tell you that right now. He wants to weaken the Patriot Act."

Tester said the Patriot Act is eroding the very freedoms the terrorists are trying to take from Americans. "Let me be clear. I don't want to weaken the Patriot Act. I want to get rid of it," Tester said.

=====

Tester rocks! Schweitzer too! Go Montana!
You guys are doing something right up there!

4. If they do repeal it
then doesn't * have to sign it? They won't come near enough to override a veto.

5. I doubt that will happen.
You will more likely see Democrats who will say that they want to amend certain portions of the law, not junk it altogether because it may have useful purposes.

John Kerry himself was for amending certain portions of the Patriot Act. He was not an "extremist" in that he wanted to repeal the whole thing. That "extremist" view was held by fellow contender Dennis Kucinich, and he lost.

7. That simply isn't going to happen
at least for 2 more long years.

To repeal would be to have both control of the House and the Senate and for such control to be veto proof.

We'll be lucky to have control of either, and the size will not be sufficient to override a veto.

Things being done now and in the past (Patriot Act, etc), are going to be on the books for a very long time.

Doesn't all legislation (including repeals) require Presidential signature or
override of the President's veto?

In other words, abandon your hopes now; they will *NEVER* be fulfilled
in this upcoming term.
