A deal was made to avoid a filibuster???
A woman caller to Thom's show just said she called Patty Murray's office to urge a filibuster and she was told a deal was made, if the ammendments were allowed to be debated and voted on they wouldn't filibuster. The staffer told her the only thing we can do is vote them out in November. I don't know if this is true, but why would a staffer say it if it wasn't true?

2. who knows what the motives of the caller were.
Or if they understood correctly what was told to them by the staffer.

3. How will voting them out
do anything? If we win it won't be enough to overturn a veto will it? Nope, once this passes that's it.

8. A legislative mistake can be overturned by future legislation. But it won't

if the composition of Congress stays the same or gets even more supportive of Orwellian inversions of constitutional rights.

I don't agree that, "once this passes, that's it."

Eventually, the political pendulum will swing back our way. It always has in the past, if you step back and take a long view. I hope "eventually" comes 40 days from now, and I think Reid has a strategy for making my wish come true.

He's getting Republicans on record as specifically abrogating habeas corpus and other Constitutional rights, and then he's getting Democrats out of town to go campaign back home.

Today's votes could provide good ammo for Democratic campaign ads against Republicans in up-for-grabs states. Let's see whether Dean and company actually use that ammo before final judgments on very difficult Party strategy decisions this week.

4. Yes, the deal happened either yesterday or the day before
It made me sick.

All bills should be discussed but the GOP said they wouldn't allow discussion unless the Dems gave up the filibuster.

5. Yep. Here's the article:

The bill’s ultimate passage was assured on Wednesday when Democrats agreed to forgo a filibuster in return for consideration of the amendment. Any changes in the Senate bill, however, would have made it impossible for Republican leaders to meet their goal of sending the bill to the White House before adjourning on Friday to hit the campaign trail.

6. Don't Worry!!! The Battlin' Congressional Dems Have Got Your Back!!!
They'll use every tool at their disposal to ensure that Americans retain their basic civil liberties, and that America will live up to its obligations of providing basic human rights to combatants.*

*Unless there's a buck in it to do otherwise, or it involves taking an actual stand on something. Hey, who the hell else you gonna vote for?
