O'Donnell raps Bush on war
September 27, 2006
In a startling new tack, Republican congressional candidate Rick O'Donnell said Tuesday that the Bush administration has bungled the war in Iraq and the U.S. needs to change course there.
"What we're doing right now isn't working. That's a failure of leadership from our president, from our secretary of defense and from our generals," O'Donnell said in a debate with Democrat Ed Perlmutter.

The statement marked a departure for O'Donnell, who has refrained from criticizing Bush. The president flew to Denver in July for a fundraiser for O'Donnell.

O'Donnell and Perlmutter are in a combative race to replace Republican Bob Beauprez, who is stepping down from the 7th Congressional District seat in the north metro area to run for governor. The race is considered key to Democrats' hopes of picking up 15 seats to retake the House. Bob Loevy, a political science professor at Colorado College, said that O'Donnell was reacting to an unpopular war and felt he had to represent his district, even if it meant going against his president.
