British troops to be recommended for medals: report 20 minutes ago

LONDON (AFP) - British troops locked in vicious fighting in Afghanistan have been recommended for almost 180 medals for gallantry, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The medals, which include "several" of the rare Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military honour, are to be rushed through for Christmas, the newspaper said.

Nearly 100 of the medals are for the men in the Third Battalion Parachute Regiment, stationed in the southern province of Helmand, where the Taliban have been mounting stiff resistance.

Describing the range of actions soldiers will be awarded recognition for, an unnamed source told the newspaper: "We're talking Waterloo stuff here."
