What is going on? I've been around the web at many news and political
sites and have found little comment on today's historic House vote. Nothing (that I saw) on CNN, MSNBC, Kos, TPM and others. Everybody is still obsessing about the NIE and another school shooting.

Congress and this administration are about to enact a sweeping revision of some of our most basic laws and to grant the Executive branch increased dictatorial powers and nobody is mentioning it tonight? This is scarier than I can say.

Yes, I did read the NYT editorial. I guess that makes it tomorrow's news?

1. Yesterday's Daily Show spent a few minutes on it.
Draw your own conclusions about what it means when a self-professed "fake news" show is the only one that will discuss the really important news.

2. I know. Nobody (most people) don't seem to even know it is happening,
let alone understand the importance of it.

What percentage of people know what habeas corpus means?

I do think it is also true that the Republican meme of "Democrats care more about protecting the terrorists then the American people" would work on most people.

This is a sad and scary moment in our history.

The idea that our only hope will be the Supreme Court is also not a particularly comforting thought although they probably will block it (I hope).

:(

4. I don't think there's anyway in hell they'll block it
The first one was for show. They specifically left the door open for congress to legislate this evil.

A Vote That Will Live in Infamy -- Who Will Betray Their Country Today and Who Will Stand Up for America?

"You must read this New York Times editorial on the detainee bill that Senators will be voting on today. They are not the only ones saying this, it is just a simple summary of the one of the worst bills in American history. This piece of legislation guts what this country is founded on.
As the New York Times explains, it is our Alien and Sedition Acts.

"There is no excuse. Democrats who vote for this bill because of cowardly political expediency will forever be tainted. We will never forget. This is the most un-American bill I have ever seen. Republicans have proven themselves to be craven sycophants who will do Vice President Cheney's bidding no matter what, over and over. There is almost no hope for any of them. They will go down in history as the leaders of the worst Congress of all time. But the Democrats ...

"For the love of God, you are supposed to be our last line of defense. You are about to gut our whole system of government. Torture. Indefinite detentions. Unlimited and arbitrary executive power. What on God's green earth is American about any of that? You're going to let them turn us into a third rate banana republic."

(there's more, at the link above)
