Democrats Cite New Hope in Bid to Retake Senate

By ROBIN TONER
Published: September 28, 2006

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 — Six weeks before Election Day, the Democrats suddenly face a map with unexpected opportunities in their battle for control of the Senate.

In Virginia, a state that few expected to be seriously competitive, Senator George Allen, a Republican, looks newly vulnerable after a series of controversies over his racial views, strategists in both parties say. In Tennessee, another Southern state long considered safely red, Representative Harold E. Ford Jr., a Democrat, has run a strong campaign that has kept that state in contention.

Elsewhere, Democratic challengers are either ahead or neck and neck in races in five states held by the Republicans: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Montana, Rhode Island and Missouri, according to political strategists in both parties and the latest polls.

All of these races could shift direction in a matter of days, let alone six weeks, and Republicans are counting on their superior finances and large blocks of television advertising to hold the line. Democrats have their own vulnerabilities, particularly in New Jersey, where Senator Robert D. Menendez has run behind his Republican challenger, State Senator Thomas H. Kean Jr., in recent polls.

4. This has nothing at all to do with the House
The chance of taking the Senate is seen as remote at best - this is good news!!

Wake up!

7. I think it's a given that Dems will re-take the House. The article
was simply concentrating on the Senate race, although I wouldn't take the House race for granted.

10. It looks promising, but BEWARE OF E-FRAUD at the BALLOT BOX.
Keep your damn eyes open, people. Some of these races could be decided by only hundreds of votes.

12. "Republicans say they have the money not only to defend their seats..."
I don't know where the Republicans would be if they didn't have a lot of money to buy out large chunks of ad time on local affiliates. The only message they have is a shallow, negative thirty second blast of bullshit.
