34 House so-called "Democrats" voted "aye" for torture.
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 06:46 PM by scarletwoman
If any of these bastards are YOUR representive, I hope you will let them know without delay that they will NEVER get your vote (or campaign contributions) again -- and make sure you tell them why.

Here's the list from thomas.gov -- unfortunately, except in cases where there is more than one rep. with the same last name, the list does not indicate which states these people are from. Hopefully, DUers will know their own:

Andrews
Barrow
Bean
Bishop (GA)
Boren
Boswell
Boyd
Brown (OH)
Chandler
Cramer
Cuellar
Davis (AL)
Davis (TN)
Edwards
Etheridge
Ford
Gordon
Herseth
Higgins
Holden
Marshall
Matheson
McIntyre
Melancon
Michaud
Moore (KS)
Peterson (MN)
Pomeroy
Ross
Salazar
Scott (GA)
Spratt
Tanner
Taylor (MS)

Complete roll call can be found here: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll491.xml

1. Is there anywhere to find out WHY they voted this way? I
always feel frustrated seeing lists of reps or senators who voted however they did, but not know why. Could they be aware of something we're not, who are they trying to appease?

Thankfully, my own rep -- always a man of integrity and principle -- was a "nay" vote, as I expected.

My guess is she figured voting the way she thinks the majority of her constituents would want her to vote will help her keep her seat.

Republican vote every damn time. Problem is, no one will run against her from the Dem party and everyone is so happy that we won the district they aren't going to try and bring her in line or give her a primary challenge.

125. I also live in her district, but only since last October.
I had the unpleasant experience of living in the Phoenix area for 5 years as JD Hayworthless's constituent. Prior to that, my rep was the dishonorable Phil Crane.

I'm not thrilled with Bean, but think she's between a rock and a hard place. I think you described her situation perfectly. When push comes to shove, I'll probably hold my nose and vote for her simply because I want to do whatever I can to keep McWeeney from taking her seat. :-(

83. My guess is that they wanted to "look tough" .
They know that Rove and his henchmen will go after them as being weak on National Security. It's the same thing that drove so many Dems to vote for the IWR. Most of them knew better but their elective office was just too damn important to them. Paul Wellstone was such a fine example of someone who put principle over the safety of his Senate seat.

This is why I like the idea of having people from the military run as Democrats. They are already inoculated against this need to "appear tough". I noticed that the Republican, Walter Jones, who was in the National Guard and represents a military district, voted against the torture bill. Good for Walter Jones.

90. Any Dem who doesn't realize that Rove will go after them no matter what
is too stupid to be in office.

There's an Old Country proverb: "If you want to beat a dog, you can always find a stick."

The Republicans always find a stick, even if it's nonsensical. There is no way to make one's self immune to Republican attacks.

If we lose this, then what do we really have left? If this legislation passes we are all phucked. How long till homosexuals, dissenters, or what have you get labeled as enemy combatants?

I did my part i typed till my fingers hurt the last few days writing letters, plus all the calls i made. We should be screaming about this from the roof tops. But all i can see from the Dem leadership it the same "keep you powder dry" mentality.

I guess it'll be easy for me to keep my powder dry when they come take me to jail, and lock me up with no charges, and no access to evidence, or representation.

Assuming it's *MY* Rob Andrews, this is yet another nail in his coffin for me.

He voted for the credit card companies in the bankrupcy bill a while ago as well... I wrote him a letter and he replied that it would bring down credit card interest rates (still waiting)...

Another poster said that the solution was for ME to run against him (as if that's ONLY other choice)... but HERE'S the other choice...

WHEN someone runs against him in the primary I will vote for THEM...

HOWEVER, I will ALWAYS vote Democratic in the general election...

But I know that Corker would have voted the same way and 6 yrs. of him will be worse. My "moderate" spouse has been been on a rampage since he got home and is frequently swearing and saying things like, "anything to keep the phoney baloney jobs", then back to swearing through clenched teeth. And this from the "moderate" one, (laughing to keep from crying).

edited to add: I've already told the staff from the offices of Lincoln Davis, Bart Gordon, and Tanner to take me off of their call lists (as of a year or so ago), and when I still received mailings from them I sent a note stating that if they wanted to continue wasting their money on postage to contact me with no result, it was their business, but I thought it rather foolish.

29. If you're assuming
I'd vote for Corker because I won't vote for Ford, you're completely wrong. Of course Corker would be worse, but lesser of two evils, ESPECIALLY where a torture vote is involved, is not acceptable to me. As I said before, others can vote as they please, but I couldn't live with my conscience if I voted for either of them. If the ballot had an option for "none of the above", that would be what I'd select. As is, I simply won't vote in the senatorial election.

33. No, not at all I meant that I understood the "neither" the "none of the
above" option. I don't have to necessarily like the choice to be able to completely understand it. Wasn't assuming anything, just trying to quietly state that I understood.

Ford will be my absolute last one of these votes. This time it is just too important to me to try to change the power numbers, i.e. who has subpeona power and who chairs committees.

This torture vote makes me ill without a doubt.

70. It was interesting...
Before I let loose, I wanted to verify that she actually voted for it. They couldn't confirm her vote and wanted my contact info to get back to me. I told her that wouldn't be necessary and to please just pass my comment along to Rep. Bean. I told her that I'm a liberal Democrat living in Bean's district and I know she needs my support, but I will be unable to vote for her. I told her I wouldn't vote for McWeenie, but I couldn't vote for Bean either. She sighed....heavily....and said, "Alright...thank you for calling."

I don't know what to read into her heavy sigh...lots of angry calls, or possibly frustration over the difficulty in pleasing her constituents. Being heavily conservative, I'm guessing someone is always pissed at her.

Here's your difference:

Vast majority of Dems voted NO to torture

Vast majority of Repukes voted YES to torture

Saying that these pro-torture Dems are indicative of all Dems is like saying that the few Repukes who voted no to torture are typical Republicans. They are not.

this is about the THIRTY-FOUR Dems who sold our Constitution, our Enlightenment heritage, our tradition of laws handed down since the Magna Carta, and everything that used to distinguish us from every petty despot the world over down the river.

If you aren't outraged by this, then I can't think of anything else to say to you.

34 Dems voted to allow Bush to Interpret the Geneva Conventions Rules
One of the main thrusts of the House bill. That's my understanding from listening to a portion of the House Debate this afternoon.

They learned **nothing** from handing him the IWR. They learned **nothing** from handing him the sweeping powers of the Patriot Act.

36. Please read. How does a person vote for torture
and a host of other abuses, one day - and then regain their honor the next?

They don't. They can't.

How will a Congress, whose members vote for torture and other abuses, hold Bush accountable for anything?

They can't. They won't.

The complicit don't want to go to jail either.

You can't say "Bush abused his authority!" when you give him the power to do just that. Once you vote to give him the authority, it's not abuse...it is a right granted by Congress.

That bears repeating...slowly and out loud

It.is.a.right.granted.by.Congress

You can't pretend you're protecting America while you gut the laws and ideals that are the very essence of what America is supposed to be about.

You can't claim you didn't know or that someone lied to you - ignorance is no excuse of the law...and for those who make the law - claiming ignorance is not only dishonest....it's criminal.

Moral clarity doesn't exist in obfuscation and distortions.

The high ground isn't reached by water-boarding.

Remember these folks. Remember what they did. But also remember, this general election is too important to hand over to the repukes.

I agree with almost every disgusted, disappointed and outraged comment here. This is a sad day for our Nation. It will be sadder still when a portion of our Democrats in the Senate cave in on this issue as well.

There are a lot of DINOs on this list but it will still be MUCH better to have a Democratic majority in one or both houses.

We can hold them accountable within our party, but we cannot allow another two years of Repuke dominance. The repukes will never be held accountable unless we regain power.

Remember, but don't toss out this chance to begin America's recovery just because we still have some internal housecleaning to do.

The fucks that voted for this need to be pushed out of public life, but not so a worse repuke can slip in behind them. I know it sucks. I hate the lesser of two evils choice. But the republicans really have embraced evil.

The truly progressive and patriotic Dems we still have can't do anything unless we can take back one of the houses.

Fortunately my own rep is one of the sane and patriotic 160, but I just saved a list of "The Dirty 34." We need a Democratic majority at all costs this time, so I guess their constituents are going to have to hold their noses and vote for them (although if you can't do that I totally understand) but they should all go down in 2008 when we're on our way towards getting our country back. Cuellar considers himself a moderate conservative and endorsed George W. Bush in 2000. Below is the photo of Bush grabbing Cuellar's cheeks at the 2006 State of the Union.

What I expressed was my personal opinion as a Democrat living in Texas - Cuellar is not a Democrat; he is not loyal to the Democratic Party.

116. Either party labels don't mean anything or,
if they are democrats, then I am not and vice versa. I mean that. Given history, they are not.

118. How many of them are up for re-election?
Guess it's write in vote time. If they're not up yet, email them and tell them they won't win again.

:wtf:

138. Ford deserves to lose his senate bid but, unfortunately, Corker will
likely vote much to the right of Ford: we are truly forever fucked.
