Got an anonymous "survey" call this afternoon. Caller ID said
"unknown caller". I usually ignore those but my SO is out of town and I thought it might be him
calling so I picked up. Some lady wants to ask me some questions about politics. I ask who she is
and who she works for but she says she isn't allowed to say. I ask where are you calling from she says "outside your area"...refused to tell me anything. I demand to speak to her supervisor - after a few
minutes she finds a guy she calls "B.J. Toby" supposedly her boss. He gets on the phone and also
refuses to give me any information whatsoever. We wrangle for several minutes (wish I had a recorder
hooked up to the phone), finally he asks me if I'm willing to take the survey...I say OK why the hell not, let's go. The lady comes back on and asks several questions:

Is your opinion of Bush positive or negative?

I said "I think the filthy son of a bitch belongs in prison"

She let a small giggle escape and said "my better half says the same thing"

The rest of the questions were about Oklahoma candidates (which one will I vote for), obviously I
name the Democrat, and a couple on social issues - one was "are you pro-life or pro-choice".
I answered BOTH.

She hung up the phone.

1. I thought that pollers were required by law to identify themselves
up front.

3. Yeah, I think you're right...
the one time I was polled was just before the 2000 (s)election. The first thing out of their mouth was "Hello, my name is X and I am with CNN/USA Today/Gallup (or whoever it was). We're conducting a poll blah blah blah"...

I think the OP might have been the victim of push-polling, which would explain the need to keep it secret.

just thought it was strange they wouldn't respond with any information at all...

5. I thought so too but they wouldn't tell me a damn thing.
But without any caller-ID info I can't think of a way to figure out who the hell they are. The questions however didn't appear to be leading or biased to me but I can't keep from wondering just
who's commissioning the poll. It could have been Dems for all I know...:eyes:

2. I don't think it is legal to call someone and then refuse to

say who (company) you are. But regardless, if the caller is legit why shouldn't they say?

edit: found this for Texas:

"Texas law provides certain protections for a person who receives a telephone solicitation at a residence.

"A telephone solicitor must:

* identify himself or herself by name;

* identify the business on whose behalf he or she is calling;

* identify the purpose of the call; and

* identify the telephone number at which the person, company, or organization making the call may be reached.
