The ministerial higher council for energy held its first meeting in 20 years and decided that studies on the nuclear power option should start immediately, cabinet spokesman Magdi Rady told reporters.
Mubarak's son Gamal, a senior ruling party official, floated the nuclear power proposal at a party conference last week and President Mubarak took it up at the closing session on Thursday.
Radi said nuclear power was now clean and safe and had economic advantages. He quoted Electricity Minister Hassan Ahmed Younes as saying the government hoped to raise the contribution made by solar, wind and hydro energy to 20 percent of Egypt's total from 13 percent but the potential was limited. snip
Egyptian officials have said that the project is intended solely for the peaceful generation of electricity.
