September 24, 2006 -- Condoleezza Rice's office gave final approval to the infamous Environmental Protection Agency press releases days after 9/11 claiming the air around Ground Zero was "safe to breathe," internal documents show.
Now Secretary of State, Rice was then head of the National Security Council - "the final decision maker" on EPA statements about lower Manhattan air quality, the documents say.

Scientists and lawmakers have since deemed the air rife with toxins.

Early tests known to the EPA at the time had already found high asbestos levels, the notes say. But those results were omitted from the press releases because of "competing priorities" such as national security and "opening Wall Street," according to a report by the EPA's inspector general.

The chief of staff for then-EPA head Christie Todd Whitman, Eileen McGinnis, told the inspector general of heated discussions, including "screaming telephone calls," about what to put in the press releases.

The notes come from a 2003 probe into public assurances made on Sept. 16, five days after the 9/11 attacks. They tell how a White House staffer "worked with Dr. Condoleezza Rice's press secretary" on reviewing the press releases for weeks.>>>>snip

An autopsy of a retired NYPD detective confirmed yesterday what his family and fellow cops long suspected - that James Zadroga's death was "directly related" to the Ground Zero cleanup.
The stunning findings are believed to mark the first time the death of a cleanup worker has been officially tied to the aftermath of the terror attacks.

"It is felt with a reasonable degree of medical certainty that the cause of death in this case was directly related to the 9/11 incident," Dr. Gerard Breton, a pathologist at the Ocean County, N.J., medical examiner's office wrote in the Feb. 28 autopsy report.

Evidence of a Health Disaster Mounts

In a November 2005 meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, Dr. David Pezant, of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine presented the findings of a report on the lung function of 12,079 firefighters, many of whom worked at Ground Zero. The study found rates of pulmonary function decline up to 12 times higher than normal in firefighters exposed to the dust-filled air following the destruction of the buildings. 9 According to New York News Day, the study showed that the average decline in lung function experienced by Ground Zero workers was equivalent to 12 years of aging. 10 As of April, 2006, the World Trade Center Screening Program of the Mount Sinai Medical Center had recorded that about 8,000 people were requiring treatment because of injuries arising from exposure to Ground Zero air. 11

Reports of deaths attributed to exposure to the Ground Zero environment began to appear in early 2006. According to a January 17 AP report, three men who searched for victims in the World Trade Center ruins died within a seven-month period. 12 In April, the New York Post reported that six 9/11 responders had developed brain cancer, and three of them died. 13 The same paper reported in June that 283 World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers had been diagnosed with cancer. 14

According to a class-action lawsuit on behalf of the workers, more than forty Ground Zero workers had died from exposure to the toxics as of April. 15 By June, the lawsuit's lawyer was claiming that the deaths numbered fifty-seven. 16
