How today's newspapers cover the NIE report release

A random, unscientific sampling of headlines on today's front pages, as seen at the Newseum.

As I look at these, I'm reminded that far too many newsrooms have underpaid, underqualified, uninformed, unaware copy editors writing their front-page headlines, and the tragic results are what we see here. I don't even want to speculate that there's active bias at work here -- all too often, it's that the people writing the headlines just don't know any better and don't realize the gravity of the words they write in 72-point type.

Great links. Could the fucking Bee get any more ridiculous. The report was LEAKED Nimrods Bush didn't unveil anything. On top of that Bush is trying to censor the information. What Shit!

4. The Fear Factor Is In Full-Tilt

The talking point here is to drum up the fear...see how high it can be turned up. I heard that moron Joe Wilson from SC attempt to say the reason the "terrorists" are spreading is aking to how Germany and Italy declared war on us right after Dec. 7th. At least that stretch required some real imagination.

The spin is turning into that since there are more "terrorists" and "we're at war" this NIE somehow proves we're making "progress". But then I hear Peter Hoekstra...another GOOP hack...throw in the caveat "well remember how the NIE got it wrong about WMD". This is major spin and ass kissing and I'll be curious how this is playing out at the 5 or 10% in "the middle" on this issue and if it is a factor that will send them to the polls on Nov. 7th or keep them at home.

10. The Hartford Courant has taken to putting all such stories on the INSIDE

No front page war stories or Iraq stories or NIE stories. They've been doing this for at least a month or so now. They'll run huge banners that look like front pages, inside the main section, but the front page now seems to be reserved for flower shows, human interest stories, propping up Lieberman (or smacking Lamont), and twenty-seven teasers for the other human interest stories in the paper. But god forbid they put a critical headline on the front page anymore. What do they think it is, a NEWSpaper? Bwhahaha!

12. I take issue with your assessment of copy editors.

Underpaid? Yes. Overworked? Absolutely. It's rare to write a perfect headline on deadline. And a headline is going to depend on its story -- there are 100 different ways to frame any story. But copy editors are some of the most informed, qualified and awared employees in the newsroom. They have to be. And they are very, very aware of the implications a 72-point hed carries.

I know you admit that your sampling is random and unscientific. But it pisses me off that you use .0075% of the newspapers (less than that, actually, since you include a head-pat "honor roll") in this country to condemn all copy editors.
