A Hurricane Evacuation Tale
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 07:25 AM by BOSSHOG
Eight years ago this morning, Hurricane Georges was meandering in the Gulf of Mexico heading for the Louisiana Coast. We had up to that time decided not to evacuate. My wife was still in bed and I went out to get the paper. A few neighbors were out looking at the sky above South Slidell (the house we were living in at the time took in six feet of water thanks to Katrina.) It was eerily dark but very calm. I opened up the Times-Picayune and they had a story about the pending storm on the front page. I read the story and got to the part which said if you plan on staying take an axe or hatchet with you into the attic in case you have to cut your way out to the roof. I went in the house, woke my wife and said "let's go." We ended up in Memphis that night and the next day we and about half of Slidell spent the day at Graceland. Fortunately Georges was no Katrina.

1. Georges
severly damaged my parents modest house in ocean springs on the gulf. They rebuilt. After Katrina only a slab was left. Not one piece of rubble. Totally wiped clean. Really eerie considering the rubble everywhere else. They live near us in Orlando now....
