My Apologies.....To Al Franken.....And Other DUers

In a thread earlier today I said that Al Franken should stay out of the spotlight ....he makes us look like fools....

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2227651&mesg_id=2227672

I said those statements based on his radio show on AAR..I have felt that most of the show was jibber jabber and personally didnt do anything to motivate me....WELL!!!!...After watching him on HARDBALL this evening I must say to Al and the other here on DU ....Im Sorry.....It is awesome to see him throw the shit this administration has thrown out back in their face....

Again Im Sorry.

2. I just tuned into it but Al is talking the truth.
Could he have been inspired by Keith Olbermann's speech last night? Could it spread to our Democratic leaders? Let's hope so.

3. Yes, it was a beautiful sight to see Al give em hell on Tweety's show
No Worries, IMO, for only people with honor and humility are able to admit when they make a mistake. To date, I've not ever seen any of my Right Wing friends or family do the same. Admitting a mistake is not within their person - it will not ever happen.

You're A OK in my little book. ;) :hi:

4. Bill's lambasting of Wallace on Faux seems to have ignited the
passions of a great many....can the momentum hold through the elections (and beyond?).....man, is it about time (and hopefully, not years too late!)

7. I think the election "full court press" has begun.
But it was Clinton's steal and fastbreak dunk that started it.

I got a basketball metaphor thing going today.

5. I think he's been taking some of the criticism to heart and has
improved his style lately.

I'm a cubicle rat, so I listen most of the day. He bugs me too sometimes, I'm not sure everyone gets his sense of humor, but he's been interviewing lots of people lately and I think he's improving his style some, features the information more.

8. Al does his homework. He thrives on bullshit artists.
One of Al's great strengths is his ability to skewer those who are trying to get by with false information. Remember, he taught a research course at Harvard.

If you try to put something by him, he will barbeque you for lunch. Al is a great counterpuncher. Those are the best moments of his show. He practically demolished John Fund to tears. (Mixed metaphor?)

10. Al is one of the good guys.
I'm not all that crazy about the radio show -- sometimes he interrupts serious guests with wisecracks when he'd be more effective if he'd just be quiet and listen -- but he has done great work supporting progressive media like AAR, as well as progressive candidates. I met Al shortly after Paul Wellstone was killed -- a bunch of us volunteers were frantically phone-banking for Mondale in this shabby little office in Minneapolis -- and this was right after Wellstone's memorial service and all the wingnuts were going on about how "inappropriate" and "political" it was.

So anyhow, Al had flown in from New York for the service, and after that he spent a few days helping the Mondale campaign. And while he was in the office he got after this evil Republican beeyotch Sarah Janacek who'd been trashing Wellstone's service and claiming the closed captioning on TV was really instructions to the audience to applaud. He was calling in to a local right-wing radio talk show to rip her a new one, and he was really fired up. I thought he was terrific, and he was very serious and very intense. Al is no fool; he's smart, committed and well-informed. I hope he does run for the Senate in MN in '08. I think he'd hand that weasel Norm Coleman his ass on a plate.

16. That's a great story. I've got a soft spot for Al since his SNL days.
Even when the show was really hit/miss, his impersonations of Pat Robertson, Strom Thurmond, etc. always cracked me up.

His AAR show is entertaining in some ways, but I think his role is to be the "gateway drug", so to speak, for new progressive talk listeners.

Can't wait to get a hold of Al's performance on H/B.

14. I listen to Al every day
I work from home and schedule my work (anytime between 6AM and 11:30PM) and my few commutes into the Office around Al. I think he is great. He is intelligent, witty, courteous, etc. (kind of like Hubert Humphrey).

Maybe it's a generational thing - I'm on Social Security and Medicare.

As a matter of fact, during the last two weeks in October and the first week in November (until the Monday before the election) I will be one of those Golden Agers campaigning for Prop 87, 89, and Al's college room-mate, Phil Angelides.

15. Email Al and ask him to bring that fire to his radio show!
I can't figure out why he's so boring on the radio, but he is, or at least was.

I've bashed Al plenty in the past, but no more. He's was GREAT tonight.

18. In the meantime, here's some clips from Al's documentary:

Go to "trailers and clips" and pick clip #1 — he tells off Michael Medved and confronts Karen Hughes
