So that it doesn't get lost in this sea of condolences, here's his Journal again: http://journals.democraticunderground.com/oneighty Read them all; they're not only well written, but have the quality that we value so well at DU ----humanity. In particular, read "Kazuko", someone who had left a deep and lastibg impression on him.

33. Used to talk to him about SC and his Boat when he lived there through
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 07:12 PM by KoKo01
Hurricane Hugo... Loved his posts and his perspective...I'm so sad ...didn't even know he was ill...but he was one of the "earliest of us" and will always hold a special place in my heart....and PM'd him back and forth a few times about SC and what it meant to him.

Peace to his family...and that they would know that in his "later years" he was inspiring to many who were on his heels and that he could at his age master the Internet and Post such wonderful memories...says much about how a person can be YOUNG AT HEART AND MIND even into their 80's.

A true warrior...who ADAPTED TO HIS TIMES and made his VOICE KNOWN to us here.

 This is very sad....another DU'er gone...but we will always remember him in the DU HALL OF FAME...those of us who read and loved his posts.

Rest in Peace...amongst the loved on the "internet" that you never at over 80 years old could have known would love and respect you so much...we were strangers you encountered and we loved you...

68. One Eighty met his wife at a Woolworth's Counter in SC many years ago..
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 07:36 PM by KoKo01
Here's part of a post he recently sent me...about his wife that's kind of an incredible "slice of life." If Tricia is out there...I hope she won't mind if I share this one snip of a post. I just wanted to share:

She grew up on the edge of a salt water creek with the Francis Marion pineywoods in the back ground. I captured her in Charleston when she was clerking in Woolworths on King Street in the fall of 57. We were married by the magistrate in the building at the corner of Meeting and Broad.

Long time passing. The Navy Minecraft was on the Ashley River end of Calhoun Street at the time. I was with EOD Unit Two there.

Condolences to your Tricia..and from those of us former SC'linians who know where the "building at the corner of Meeting and Broad" is...

 We send you our love...

227. "Love at the Five and Dime" by Nanci Griffith
Rita was sixteen years
Hazel eyes and chestnut hair
She made a Woolworth counter shine
Eddie was a sweet romancer
And a darn good dancer
They'd waltz the aisles of the five & dime

(Chorus)
They'd sing
Dance a little closer to me
Dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight
Dance a little closer to me
'Cuz it's closing time
And love's on sale tonight
At this five & dime

Eddie played the steel guitar
His mama cried 'cuz he played in the bars
And kept young Rita out late at night
So they married up in Abilene
Lost a child in Tennessee
But, still that love survived

He sang
Dance a little closer to me
Dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight
Dance a little closer to me
'Cuz it's closing time
And love's on sale tonight
At this five & dime

Eddie travelled with the barroom bands
Till arthritis took his hands
Now he sells insurance on the side
Rita's got a house to keep
She writes dimestore novels
Of a love so sweet
They dance to the radio late at night

(Repeat chorus)

(Repeat first verse)

They'd waltz the aisles of the five & dime
They'd waltz the aisles of the five & dime

My heart goes out to his friends and family

108. Roast beef sandwich on a kimmelweck roll.
It's a Buffalo thing. Kimmelweck is a roll with coarse salt and, I think, a bit of caraway in it. Saw it discussed on the Food Network once -- I guess it's only served in the Buffalo area. If you're there, try Schwabel's (Schwabl's?) or Eckl's for the real deal.

Anyway, you could do worse than washing down a beef on weck with a beer. It's a nice little wish for a Buffalo-area guy.

88. A sailor's eulogy
WHO LOVED SO WELL
(A sailor's eulogy)
by Robert E. Browne CPO, USN, ret.

We sailed the sea by oceans light,
Around the horn through restless night.
Our course and luck did make it right
To see things new in strange delight.

The seas were harsh and took their toll
With branded flesh and tortured soul
And when at last the sun sat low
It touched the earth with blood red glow.

The mighty wars have all been won.
Now empty winds slack sails undone.
The world is ours but mates care not
And search in vain for wars unfought.

Silver breakers plight our trough
To sails unfurled and winds aloft.
Spirits soar on breezes free
That bear the souls of sailors we.

Hear our prayer Oh Lord our God.
We lived to serve and wield thy rod.
Though wretches we and racked with flaws,
We are the ones who fought thy cause.

Now bleached white bones on foreign sands
Attest the toll in far off lands
For those who heard their country's call,
Brave sailors each, who came to fall.

Remember those who served on ships
And bid farewell on endless trips
Across the seas to Timbuktu
And lived and died, these chosen few.

We ask this, Lord, for those so true
And honor bound beneath skies blue
Who served and died for freedom's hand
To hold and cherish this, your land,

A sailor's death on ships of sleep
With few to know and none to weep
For faith so brave, a soul to keep
A silent grave in oceans deep.

And when the end has come at last
And unfilled shadows heaven casts,
Remember we who served and fell
And to the hosts of heaven tell,
Bring home my boys who loved so well.

79. "Keep your tanks full, by golly!" 180's last words to me -words to live by
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 07:49 PM by Divernan
Here's the last PM I got from him, just a couple of weeks ago. I'm so sad to hear he's died. I know he was getting less than adequate care in a VA Hospital - shortage of equipment/supplies. For those of you who didn't know his background, this will give you a sense of him.

Since I was a little guy reading Twenty Thousands Leagues Under the Sea and Danger is my Business I wanted to be a DIVER. Also I wanted to be a SAILOR. While in the early years of my Navy career I was an EOD helper clearing sea mines in Korea. The EODs used a surface supplied rig called a 'Jack Brown'. We did not have masks fins or SCUBA.

Some four years later I put in for EOD School and was surprised to find myself in Key West Fla as a student in US NAVY SCHOOLS UNDERWATER SWIMMERS. most of that was clear water diving except for the many night swims. fun fun fun.

Then it was Jack Brown and Mark Five hard hat in the muddy Potomac River at Indian Head Md and EOD/SWD school. Never see a thing in that water.

Out in the fleet (EOD Unit two) we had two kinds of divers. Clear water divers and Blackwater Divers. I became a black water diver because I could do it. We were paid $5.50 an hour and every part of an hour. Blackwater divers made the money. Hahahaha

It was a rare treat to get a diving job where we had good visibility.

I did make a Med trip where we got some recreation diving in. Not too shabby.

As A civilian I did some great lakes diving for the army engineers-again nasty work.

I moved into engineering at Scott Aviation where I was involved in design and production of undersea products.

I finished my diving career at SUNY Buffalo with Dr. Ed Lanphier, Rhan and Lundgren where we did diving research.

Keep your tanks full by golly.

ED

and I think to myself, there's got to be more DU'ers who pass away and no one knows it because of the general nature of privacy. I'm so very happy that several people got to know these two people enough to find out they had moved on.

In respect, although I didn't know either I pray for their families & friends, what a sad day on DU.

99. I never knew him personally.
That's typical of so many of us in this DU community, but we value each other nonetheless. A while back, we had engaged in some dialog --- mainly on a thread of his, but afterwards by private mail. It had to do with mutual remembrances of early post-war Japan, as well as some points regarding the Language. In his last letter, he directed me to his Journal, which is at: http://journals.democraticunderground.com/oneighty He was a much better writer than I had originally thought him to be. And much of it centered on "Kazuko", apparently a real name, and all the narration was no doubt based closely on fact. I didn't know him well enought to to say that she was "the love of his life", but she most certainly left a very deep and lasting impression on him.

I'm not a card-carrying Christian, so I won't even attempt to utter what is sometimes referred to as "pious platitudes", but I too am truly saddened.

So Rest In Peace, "oneighty", and good thoughts to Kazuko too.

I did not know him that well, only having read a number of his posts. I remembered him as one of our oldest DUers, but his journal said he was 72 which is not THAT old. My dad will be 73 in December and he's still pretty spry, coming here next week to tear down my porch. I know that 180 will be missed because there have been threads searching for him when he was gone for a while, and that he was very much loved by Skittles.

236. OLD??? No, not "old", by crackee!!
I'm 76.7 myself!! (Dangnabit, now where did I put my ... SHIT! I forgot what I was looking for!)

I had started to re-read some of his stories, but had to put them aside for a while, lest I get choked up!

I assume that the poster of this thread will have alerted 180's next of kin and friends to this site. So let's keep the condolences and words of praise rolling in! (And perhaps the admins of DU will take steps to "highlight" 180's stories. They're outstanding in their own right, but especially so from a fellow DUer.)

Fond farewells to "oneighty" and to Kazuko too.

You're not ugly Grampa!

Grand daughter Rebecca now is four years old. She has decided to become my keeper. Upstairs where I spend most of my time she calls me ED when she remembers to. It is our little secret. "Hey Ed" she will say "Can I look at the pictures." The pictures go back a long way, sixty years or so. She says "Hey Ed can I" lots of times during the course of a day.

Last weekend she helped clean my spaces, scrubbing floors, dusting making up the bed in the spare room. Later looking at pictures she sees pictures of me when I was younger. I explain to her how I have grown old and wrinkled and that now I am just a ugly and tired old man.

Rebecca says "You not ugly Grampa."

Death is only the final step in our lives on earth.
I honestly belive that we continue on in some form after our work here is done.
180 has taken that step, hes not gone, and we will all meet up with him again one day when we are privilaged to take our final step.

Sleep well 180, we will all meet again one day in a better place.

Not my words:

Prayer

I give you this one thought to keep -
I am with you still - I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the sweet uplifting rush,
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone -
I am with you still in each new dawn.

172. Very sad news
I got to know Ed over the last few months and he joined a personal forum of mine under the name voyager. I was also fortunate enough to read his novella Kazuko which he sent me a copy to review. I'll post it here.

Kazuko By Edward Gard.

The novella Kazuko, by Edward Gard is more like an annotated epic poem than a coherent narrative. This works for it however and Gard’s paragraph structure though simple, I would almost describe them as small literary vignettes, are surprisingly descriptive for his sparse use of words.
Kazuko is an epic poem about a sailor and his siren that calls to him from across the sea. The poem in its entirety is on the last page. Gard takes us on a short but important journey there filling in the “real world” blanks of a story which could be written simply about mythological archetypes. The poem is broken into parts in the body of the story and “annotated” with the tales of Eddie’s journey to its conclusion.
More specifically it is about little Eddie waiting for his day to ride the train that seems to take all of the boys from his Western New York home to the place where they meet the sea that they will ride to war and become men.
Eddie dreams of his siren calling him across the vast oceans, beckoning him to make that physical and spiritual journey into manhood with distant love its reward. We learn of some of his friends and in the author’s flashes forward in time we learn some of their fates before they do. Eddie’s life as a child is spelled out for us with ample description, and through the child’s eyes. One particularly stark segment about a vile attack Eddie endured was heartbreaking in its innocent honesty.
We know where Eddie came from and who he is when the poem/story moves into its second segment about his experiences during the Korean War while stationed on a U.S. Minesweeper and his time spent in Japan. Gard’s prose in this segment reminds us of the universal experiences of soldier at war and of the times of extreme inactivity that many support units experience. The sailors fill their time with tales and games and of course with the company of the local population. Specifically Japan’s thriving prostitution services to GIs in port.
Movement the third is when Eddie finds his Kazuko and finds his first true love. They can barely communicate but seem to share an almost fate driven love that comforts them both through the loneliness and horror of war. Eddie becomes more than a GI “John” and realizes what they share is real which of course makes it more tragic when sailor and siren must inevitably be parted by oceans of distance and time again.
Edward Gard has graced us with a simple but endearing and universal love story in “Kazuko”. It is clearly from his heart and from many personal experiences and the reader is richer for sharing a small part of one small man’s life and loves. The ending of the poem suggests a more “Romeo and Juliet” resolution to the tale. I for one am glad the real “Eddie” stuck around to tell it.

Just a personal anecdote.

Ed was kind enough to check out a site I used to run and contribute much of his writing to it. He also joined a small local forum I was running and he was a huge hit on it. He was our most prolific poster and at one point expressed concern to me that he was boring the other members. I assured him he was mistaken and promptly gave him the title of Poet Laureate of our forum. Ed was genuinely grateful which I almost laughed about because it was kind of a goof title and our massive forum never reached over 40 members, but that's the kind of man I suspect Ed Gard was. Just a true and good human being and how many of those do we find anymore? A man who would probably give you the shirt off his back and ask if you needed his pants too. I've read a small part of his work and been enthralled by his stories. I barely knew the man but he took time to advise me on some problems and endeavors of mine just because he could and as recently as a month ago as sick as he must have been.

Ed was old-school. A real American. Not an Angel but never a devil. A father, husband, poet, friend, lover, warrior. All these things and more and I'm privledged for having known what little of his life I did. Good Journey and fair winds, sailor.

I had the pleasure to receive one of Oneighty's books in the mail a couple of years ago. He had very fond memories of his time in Japan, where I am living now, especially of the Enoshima area near Yokohama. I went to Enoshima and took some pictures to show him what the area is like today. As a token of his gratitude, he sent me his book.

Oneighty will be sorely missed

Never really knew you except from your posts and thoughts. Your name stood out on this board to me in most threads I read over.

305. Sail away easy, dear 180! My sympathies to all his loved ones.
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

Crossing the Bar by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

326. I think Oneighty would appreciate "Crossing the Bar", too...
after I stayed up all night the evening he died, reading his journal stories. He was a fantastic writer and a sailor at heart, so he would totally understand the significance of this poem.

Used it for my dad's own funeral.

He really did have the most marvelous posts and will really be missed here. And I absolutely agree that he'd appreciate Tennyson's memorable poem. And I'm so very sorry about your Dad. That must have been very touching, and very hard to do. I also spoke at my father's funeral, told a story about him helping me rescue turtles. I wanted people, other than the family, to know how much he loved animals...;(

317. Dear Ed (oneighty):
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 10:14 PM by Dangerously Amused

Thank you so much for sending me one of the last copies of your book in December. I know I thanked you then, but today I need to thank you again. Your writing is remarkable: simple, honest and raw, yet gentle and profound all at once. Your words engage my heart and mind in a way that no other writer ever has. Remember when I told you that an unusual thing happened when I became immersed in "Kazuko," that I could read only so much before taking a break because the images and emotions your words conjured up were so intense that I had to come up for air before plunging back into the story again? I wasn't joking, Ed. That never happened to me in anything else I've ever read. Ever. I know you felt humbled by the fact that you never had a formal education in writing, but if anyone didn't need one, it surely was you. You had an amazing gift and a fascinating life, and I thank you for shining your wonderful light into the world for the rest of us to share. Your work will always be an inspiration to me in my own writing.

I am looking at my copy of the "Vicky Mary" now. Remember how I insisted that you autograph it for me? I'm glad I did, although today the smiley face that you drew next to your signature is bittersweet. But thank you for humoring me with your inscription. And thank you too for the PM reply you sent me eight days ago. I knew you weren't well Ed, and I guess I wanted to remain optimistic... but as I re-read the PM and now see the subtle hints you dropped amid your characteristic hopefulness... I think you knew. So it means the world to me that you took the time and made the effort to write anyway. As strong and brave in that moment as you ever were in war, Ed. How I admire your courage and wisdom.

I'm going to miss you, Ed. I'm going to miss you a lot. Your stories brightened so many of my days and your correspondence provided encouragement and support in difficult times, despite your own hardships. You taught me some important life-lessons when I most needed to learn them, primarily by setting a good example. No one could ask for a better friend than you, Ed. You made a positive difference in my life and for that I will always be grateful.

May the love and peace you’ve brought to others reflect and surround you as you continue on your journey, dear friend. With a heavy heart, I bid you À Dieu.

352. Walk in Beauty
I offer a Navajo Prayer

In beauty, may I walk.
All day long, may I walk.
Through the returning seasons, may I walk.

Beauty will I possess again.
Beautiful birds...
Beautiful joyful birds...

On the trail marked with pollen, may I walk.
With grasshoppers about my feet, may I walk.
With dew about my feet, may I walk.

With beauty, may I walk.
With beauty before me, may I walk.
With beauty behind me, may I walk.
With beauty above me, may I walk.
With beauty all around me, may I walk.

In old age, wandering on a trail of beauty,
lively, may I walk.
In old age, wandering on a trail of beauty,
living again, may I walk.

If it is finished in beauty.
It is finished in beauty.
It is finished in beauty.

=======
Peace and Blessings.

382. I'm so very sorry JitterbugPerfume.
May you find comfort in having been fortunate enough to have loved such a man as he.

I love how he cared so much for our poor; a great human being.

May peace find you.

396. Never knew Oneighty, but I can tell he was loved and admired
Since I am new to this list I never had the privilege of meeting Oneighty online, but reading these posts gives me a good idea that he was a good guy.

Many condolences to those who are left behind who loved him.
