(Cross-posted from lounge)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=5669166&mesg_id=5669166

I just think it's about time....don't you?
Is there some way we could structure it so it could be added to perpetually, kinda like the research page or something?
Ideas?

Please add your support if you think this is feasable so I can direct it to Skinner & co's attn. like we do with requests for new groups-reason being there's no sense in doing this if it's just going to be a waste of server space. I want to make sure we are all going to keep it fairly active.

I'm thinking something that can be open to anyone adding thoughts to a certain person's memorial space whenever they want, a la the research forum. However, any ideas are welcomed; I'm not an expert on this.

Thanks for your time....

2. I think it's a great idea. At another web site I belong to, they
have a special forum called "we remember." Inside of it, there are specific links for each of the members who have passed away. People go in there all the time and leave posts. And the family members have a way of staying in touch as well. They come in and post about how they and their families are doing. They post when they need a hug. They just come in to know that their loved ones are being remembered by their fellow posters. I wonder all the time how the families of Andy, Scott and Jeff are doing.

So I'm kicking this one.

24. That's a very nice idea
I wonder especially about MommaKeph, and I think it would be very comforting to families to see how their loved ones are still remembered here.

Many of us have real-life friends and lovers at DU. Should the unthinkable happen, what a comfort it would be to have a place to say "I still love you and miss you."

The longer DU stays open and the larger it grows, the more we need a forum like this for the community. People who touch you - even if you've never met them - deserve to be remembered.

I hope Skinner reads this thread and considers the value of the suggestion. If he puts the idea to a vote, I vote yes.

even a link to their Journal, keeping their memory around.

If not a tribute page, then maybe a Forum area. I understand that with Admin approval, that would only take a certain number of donors voting for it to make it so. If that's the route, count me in as one.

38. Are you talking about people who don't post here any more?
People who have stopped posting for one reason or another? I'm not sure that's in the spirit of this proposal; many of those people may be participating in other discussion groups that are critical of DU, for instance, and who would police that?

I'm sure you can't mean tombstoned ex-DUers, although that is a kind of death.

I guess it goes with the size of DU - I never "met" Alarcojon or 180, and I'm guessing there's a lot of current DUer's who have never even heard of Kephra or Birdman...

It would be nice to have a corner for our fallen.

23. I think that is a wonderful suggestion. How about a "DU Memorial Wall"
something that might resemble the Viet Nam Wall in D.C. I have no idea how to construct a graphic representation of something like that but surely it's not all that hard for someone with programming
skills...? Just a thought...

52. I suppose "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" but ...
... I must admit to some deep unease about how 'the wall' has become some loose paradigm for memorialization of everything from pets to coworkers. This is NOT to trivialize the death of members of this community, but I'm particularly sensitive to the enormously poignant symbolism of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. (It took me over 20 years to visit it for the first time, despite many trips to Washington in the interim.)

I see it not just as a wall, but as an escarpment - the fracture in the People's Mall caused by the cataclysm of that time. Virtually invisible (unseen) from some perspectives, it takes a bit of a search in what should symbolize the soul of our country. The black reflective surface, the bare names of their birth WITHOUT rank ... it's special. Indeed, it was (many of us assumed) the sole memorial on the Mall ... carefully designed to not take away from the People their freedom of assembly in that very Mall - where, we should never forget, people gathered to hear and share Dr. King's dream. A few sacrificed all and many not at all - in keeping with the very definition of 'service.' Even in symbolizing the deep divisions in our nation of that time (even until now), it calls upon us to remember and reflect upon those divisions, hopefully in some future time when such divisions no longer exist.

:kick: for those we love and remember.

Edited to add: If you go to the forum and click on BJ's thread, at the top of her forum you will see pictures. BJ was an artist and she would share her drawings with the board. I love the way they put up personalized banners such as that, as a way to honor each person. I know we probably couldn't do that here, but I wanted to mention it. For BJ. She was a friend of mine on that board.

I'm sure there are lots of single people, who may have more online friends than real-world friends, but if there is no person in their life to tell us, they just fade away and suddenly we realize that they are gone..yet we never know for sure..

Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 11:24 PM by TahitiNut
No person should ever die and have the hole they leave in our human community ignored, least of all in a community that celebrates our common humanity as a core element of its very existence. I can only imagine the immeasurable despair of dying alone ... someone's child, someone's coworker, someone's student, someone's neighbor ... to die and not even have it noticed. I cannot think of a more tragic event - tragic for us and what we hold dearest.

DU MEMORIAL WALL IS A GO. PLEASE READ.

Is that thread supposed to be the memorial wall? It seem to me that it is, but as I write this, no one has posted any names to remember, but have only responded to say it sounds like a great idea.

Also, it seems strange to me that a thread could serve as a "memorial wall" because it would eventually sink and be archived however good the intension. Why not do a page on the Research Forum for this?
