BREAKING: Harman Calls for Release of Second Secret Iraq Report
BREAKING: Harman Calls for Release of Second Secret Iraq Report
By Justin Rood - September 26, 2006, 12:15 PM
There's a second damning Iraq report floating around the intelligence community.

At least, that's according to Rep. Jane Harman (CA), the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee. At an event this morning, Harman disclosed the existence of a classified intelligence community report that gives a grim assessment of the situation in Iraq, and called for it to be shared with the American public -- before the November elections.

The report has not been shared with Congress, although sources say a draft version may have circulated earlier this summer. It is a separate report from the one revealed by major news outlets Sunday, which is said to conclude that the war in Iraq has made the U.S. less secure from terrorist threats.

"This morning at the National Press Club, Jane Harman did say that there is an on Iraq," her spokesman, Ari Goldberg, confirmed. Golberg said he had not read the report, but believes it may be grim. Sources at the event say the document is not officially an NIE, although it was prepared by the National Intelligence Council, an community-wide intelligence body whose primary function is to prepare NIEs.

Dr. Lawrence Korb, a former senior Defense Department official now with the liberal-progressive Center for American Progress, hasn't seen the report but has discussed it with those who have. "It's a very bleak picture of what's going on in Iraq," he said. Harman called for the White House to share a classified version of the report with Congress -- and to release a declassified version of the document to the American public, prior to the November elections.

Democratic sources on the Hill confirmed that the report has been a topic of discussion, particularly because of concerns that its release was being "intentionally slowed" by the administration. Attendees at the National Press Club event where Harman spoke -- a rollout for a new Democratic defense/intelligence policy group called the National Security Network -- characterized Harman saying the reported was "languishing" under wraps

3. they are scared spit-less
Like the little boy with his fingers in the dyke, trying to stem the flow. The dam is about to burst. How in the hell, did they actually think they could keep all this secret?

Along with denying the closed session...they appear guilty. Why would they risk looking guilty as hell?

I'd be SHOCKED if these reports were made public. I'm not being a downer, really... I'm just saying they have the majority and it's right before election... it adds up.

8. Because that would be less damaging
than us actually seeing what is in the report. It must be pretty bad.

9. Senator Gravel did what he did in the dead of night
The media came and recorded it (they didn't have CSPAN in those days).

Either way, The Pentagon Papers became a permanent part of the Congressional Record.

13. I swear I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing.
That is a beautiful story. What a hero.

There is just too much for citizens to know. Work, play, and stay on top of the mountain of political stuff that we pay our representatives to do for us.

Well, here we are. Paying attention.

Thank you for enlightening me.

7. Bush to declassify parts of leaked intelligence report
Bush to declassify parts of leaked intelligence report
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/09/26/nie.iraq/
POSTED: 1:45 p.m. EDT, September 26, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An angry President Bush Tuesday said he would declassify an intelligence document that reportedly finds that the Iraq war increased the terrorist threat to the United States, saying the American people should come to their own conclusions.

The president said the media accounts of the leak was meant to "create confusion in the minds of the American people" and suggested that the report had been leaked for political purposes.

Bush said he has ordered to Director of National Security John Negroponte to declassify the report's key findings during a joint White House press conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

"He'll do so in such a way that we'll be able to protect sources and methods ... that our intelligence community uses," Bush said, "and then everybody can draw their own conclusions about what the report says."

"It will stop all the speculation, all the politics about somebody saying something about Iraq; you know, somebody trying to confuse the American people about the nature of this enemy," Bush said.

--

interesting... now he wants us to read the "approved" part and draw our own conclusions without the media trying to confuse us and he's hoping it will stop the speculation ... ???

if anything it will most likely increase the speculation about what it is that has been redacted...

meanwhile.. I found this a bit amusing... CNN characterized Bush as being angry, Reuters said Bush bemoaned... is it possible to be angry and bemoaning at the same time?

10. The Dems have so many weapons if only they would use them.
They need to get up on every stump in the country & demand that the Puggies inform the public of the truth. Make sure that overy troglodyte and troll, every apolitical, head-in-the-sand Nascar-jacketed juvenile delinquent and every Idle American knows that ehere is SOMETHING BIG OUT THERE that the Puggies don't want them to know.

Then the Puggies can either

A) release it & get their asses kicked

or

B) keep it covered and get their asses kicked.

Any partial, limited hangouts with all the juicy parts redacted get treated as instances of A.

11. Here is the transcript: Harman Reveals 2nd Iraq Report
As reported here earlier, here are Rep. Jane Harman's (D-CA) comments this morning about this second secret Iraq report, from CQ Transcriptions:

"I have also learned that there is a on Iraq -- specifically on Iraq -- that has been left in draft form at the National Intelligence Council. That is because some of our leaders don't want us to see it until after the election. It should be clear five years after 9/11 that we need accurate and actionable intelligence -- actionable in real time -- and we need our leaders to read that intelligence and cite it accurately. Sadly, we're doing better on the first piece; we're not doing better on the second piece."
