11. I voted for George Allen in 2000...
:puke:

And, yes, I am black.

:dunce:

Suffice it to say that he will NOT be getting my vote this time around. But I came to this conclusion not today or this week but after the "macaca" incident and subsequently learning more about his past (e.g., confederate flag/noose hanging, etc.). Recent revelations have only solidified my decision to part ways with this individual. I don't know how many other black "Republicans" there are in Virginia whose vote will change as a result, but here's one.

13. Welcome to DU Rosalind!!!
Good to have you! :hi:

The whole noose hanging in his office thing has always stuck in my craw, I knew there was more to his history and now it is slowly leaking out. Did you hear about him leaving a severed deer's head in a black resident's mailbox??? Effing sick!!! :grr:

14. Welcome to DU
We're glad to have you onboard! I would also like to praise your bravery is saying what you have.

As with many other things, I don't think such a revelation should be limited to only black "Republicans". I'm white and I'm outraged by his comments as well. Further, I don't think his racism has been revealed as only targeted against blacks, but also hindus, latinos, asians, and just about any other group of people you can think of.

His comments and actions can't in any way, shape, or form be seen as any kind of misunderstanding. Allen's racism is not isolated to a comment in a moment of weakness, not that it would be any better if it were. It's unquestionable that this man is unfit to be a leader of our country.

Unfortunately, having spent a lot of time in the nether regions of Virginia, I think a lot of people will see his racism as a plus rather than a minus. I've seen gigantic Confederate flags waived and worn. I've seen areas with more Confederate flags than US ones. If he does, indeed, win re-election, I do think he will reflect his constituency more than anyone would like to admit.

2. The thing is it isn't that easy these days
There seems to be such a lot of suppression of the black vote...here in Michigan one of the local groups for minority rights, releases this huge report about the different ways in which black voters were disenfranchised here....it was really shocking.

And in Virginia I would have to imagine the situation would be even worse....

3. All the more reason to get out and vote, or attempt to vote and
make sure you get any obstruction to casting one's ballot witnessed and verified.

5. Oh of course yes
But my point is that if it *seems* as though not enough of the black voters went out and voted, its possible that its because they tried and there vote just didn't count or they were not allowed to vote for some shady reason....

ugh..I remember this rumor the GOP affiliated groups were circulating right before the elections in 2004 to get black voters & specifically the low income voters among them to not vote. They were spreading rumors (via pamphlets and flyers) that if you had ever been late on a rent payment or had a misdemenour charge against you, when you went to vote you might have to deal with the police....
such assholes....

4. How any self-respecting person could vote for
Allen after all of these revelations is beyond me. But then, millions voted for a guy for Pres. who can't complete a coherent sentence. Go figure.

7. For real!
Allen just got caught with the macacca slur but now former friends and classmates are speaking up against him.
You can bet your ass that alotta these Southern RepubliCANTS are "good ol' boys" through and through.Meaning if they are Allens age and Republican? They feel the same way he does and have used the same language he has.

8. Interesting how his past is coming back to haunt him .....
thought the use of the n-word among large sections of Virginia's population wouldn't surprise me.

Virginia is a bizarre state, with various sections of Republicans fighting against each other, much less against the liberal DC suburbs. Some extreme reactionaries in VA.

10. Who would Patsy Cline have voted for?
She was a poor girl from Winchester with a lot of spirit and a lot of spark. I wonder what she would think of George Allen. Probably not much.
