Kudos to Oprah for having the guts to publicly endorse a Democrat
...ANY Democrat.

Personally, I'm happy she picked Obama because he's a favorite of mine, but that's besides the point. The important thing is that she endorsed a Democrat, so what's that tell ya.

I don't really follow Oprah, but only because I don't watch TV shows like hers very much. All I know is that when someone of such high esteem, respect, & visibility announces favoritism toward one party or the other like she just did, that person is going out on a limb and risking losing a lot of fans.

Considering this is DU and considering how unpopular Oprah and Obama are here (BTW, something I'll never figure out is why Obama, or Oprah for that matter, are so unpopular on a Democratic forum), the fact is that Oprah Winfrey is revered by a HUGE number of people in this country. She just might be one of the most loved and respected high-profile TV personalities ever. When she speaks, people from all angles listen and they suck in what she has to offer.

Christ almighty you'd almost think she endorsed some Repuke by some of the reactions around here.

Stop worrying about WHAT Democrat she endorsed. She endorsed a Democrat, PERIOD.

2. She told Larry King that the man who wanted Oprah to run should put his
energies behind Barack Obama instead.

10. Obama for President? Oh crap. Are people going to start
that nonsense?

Please don't tell me that they are.

3. Good!
You are right - when she speaks, an awful lot of people listen, and she'll have a large influence.

As to your other comment:

something I'll never figure out is why Obama, or Oprah for that matter, are so unpopular on a Democratic forum

There are a few of us at DU who have the intellectual capacity to criticize someone even if they have politics we agree with. I don't know about Obama dissing, I haven't seen it; but I have been one of the many Oprah dissers - just because she's a Democrat (or certainly has seemed to be over the years) and gives a lot of money to good causes doesn't mean that we don't have a right to criticize her. Oprah doesn't buy immunity with her voting record, just like I don't, you don't, and every doesn't.

I'm getting sick and tired of the "You can't criticize people who are or who might be on our side!" crowd.

4. Stop w/the drama. I didn't say "You can't criticize" any of our own people
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 08:05 AM by mtnsnake
I said I can't figure why certain of our own people are so unpopular on this forum.

6. Perhaps if you listened to the critiquers, then you would understand.
You might not agree - and that's fine. But you would understand.

7. I have always basically liked Oprah.
She's a smart, self-made woman. Yeah, it would be great if she used her power to radically change the world instead of just to make big bucks on daytime teevee. But when I used to watch her back in the 80's, I remember being startled by the depth of empathy and compassion she brought to the boob tube.

I don't know what she's up to these days, but clearly she's not drinking Bushco Koolaid.

I am *all over* Obama for president (or even Oprah, for chrissakes). He's relatively unexperienced, but heck, that could be a good thing -- I've had it with the status quo. He's brilliant and charming and a new face and NOT a member of PNAC. That's all I ask, anymore.

9. I'm not at all surprised by this
In the fall of 2004 she did a show about getting the vote out,she had Christina Aguilera on there with the MTV 'Get the Vote Out' and a lot of other people. It was basically a show trying to get the vote out FOR KERRY.

I can't remember exactly what she said but something to the effect of "if you re elect George Bush he is going to set the womens movement back 50 years"

Oprah is a Democrat and is not at all shy about endorsing the Party.I'm glad to hear she's back on the 'campaign trail' so to speak. Go Oprah! :kick:
