Oprah Lords Over White Folk, Talks Poop on XM

Posted Sep 25th 2006 1:52PM by TMZ Staff
If it wasn't already totally evident that Oprah Winfrey can talk about anything for any length of time, her debut today on her own XM Radio channel just confirmed it.....cut

Among many, many other things, Oprah talked about her humble beginnings in Mississippi, and particularly about how her mother's highest aspiration for her was that she might end up cleaning white people's houses, because "they give away nice clothes." And then Oprah pointed out that now that she's Oprah, she has "all these white people" working for her, and that in fact there's only one black person on the staff. Way to turn the tables, girl.

Finally -- and this was just in the first fifteen minutes -- Oprah moved onto her most recent favorite topic, excrement. O assured Gayle that the reason she doesn't have children wasn't that she can't deal with poo, or "pooty," as the pair called it. For this -- and whatever follows -- is what XM is paying Oprah $55 million over the next three years.

So...let me see if I grok the logic of this. She has one black person on staff, and she is happy about that?

Some of the comments below at the link are a tad assinine (just a heads up warning)

1. Interesting......
1. She shouldn't have said it....sometimes it's best to keep those kind of things personal....she achieved something her mother couldn't

2.Why does she have one black person on staff? That's kind of odd....yet facinating.....

3. And poo....odd topic

5. Who reported it? It's "OPRAH"! I really think she's the real deal, but
I've seen her do dumb things, just like we all have, and do. In her case, she gave cars away.
But really, I have never seen this woman be selfish; she's been very giving, and I cannot fault her.
Oprah rocks!

2. I think Oprah has made many humanitarian efforts
with her riches, so I refuse to discount her.
This sounds really negative, and I can't even imagine
Oprah not being savvy enough to make it a lot better
than that. Your source sounds scuzzy.

8. S_S, don't worry about it. I just bet I might interpret what you
read differently. So you heard Oprah and Gale. Girlfriends. Is it 'that bad'?

3. Wow. I can't imagine that a selfless person like Oprah...
... would dedicate a whole network to aggrandizing herself. Although, a magazine, and a daily television show I can see because people need to know what a saint she is. :sarcasm:

6. Would you rather she just buy an island somewhere with
all her zillions and play golf the rest of her life? Heaven forbid that she keep running all these companies!

... about what an amazing humanitarian and philanthropist she is from her own mouth.

She is the most self absorbed TV personality ever. Everything she does (including her Angels Network) is done for the purpose of showing that she is a self made saint to be placed on a pedestal. If she really was as altruistic as she acts she wouldn't need all the praise and recognition that she lavishes upon herself.

15. You must watch her a lot more than I do.
I haven't watched her since she went to New Orleans.

But I'm wondering why she's coming under such vitriol when the airwaves are packed with people like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter.

21. It was a dumb comment...
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 06:32 PM by file83
I misunderstood the context of the original article. I thought that Oprah was talking about her staff on the show being all white - which I thought was a strange attitude. I was wondering why she wouldn't be employing African Americans on her staff. But being that she was talking about her mom's house keeping staff being all white - it changes the context and so now my original comment makes no sense now.

Ooops!

18. I'm almost afraid to hear the answer, but I think what you're saying
is that since she's so successful, she's not a real African-American.

Or that by being successful, she's somehow betrayed her roots.

10. C'mon. CONTEXT - CONTEXT - CONTEXT...
...look, I'm no fan of Oprah's show (and never have been), but she was talking in the CONTEXT of her mother having once urged her to work for white people because they "give away nice clothes." Her POINT seemed to be that her mother's world, as a black woman, was so limited by the oppression of Jim Crow that her aspirations for her daughter were limited to hoping she could go to work for white people...and now her daughter has white people working for her.

Even a chronic cynic like me cannot help but crinkle a smile in Oprah's direction contemplating that such things are possible, even if long overdue, in the America of today. They didn't used to be - PERIOD.

And spare me the tirades about "there's still a long way to go" and "this is just one person" and all of that: yes, yes, that's all true.

It still doesn't make what Oprah said any less true, for HER, or any less valid a reason to celebrate the fact that one of the top-rated television hosts in 2006 America - whose very words millions upon millions of people hang upon - is a black woman from Mississippi.

Those of us who caught the tail end of the ugliness that was unrepentant Jim Crow as it was sputtering to a just end growing up in the early seventies recognize what she is talking about - and understand.

Count me as a white male unoffended in the least by her comments.

12. I'm a white female who feels the same way. Ya know, I'd probably
try to meet as many people as possible, have as many experiences as possible, and try to help as many people as possible if I had Oprah's money.
I don't give a good damn what she does with her money (that's what everyone is so concerned about), but she's a very nice lady in my book. She's well-loved and she's earned it.
