Jerry Falwell Calls Hillary Clinton 'Worse than the Devil'
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 11:26 PM by tocqueville
Falwell acknowledges Clinton comment By DENA POTTER, Associated Press Writer
Mon Sep 25, 8:40 AM ET

RICHMOND, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell acknowledged on Sunday that he said if Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton were the Democrats' presidential nominee in 2008, it would motivate conservative evangelical Christians to oppose her more than if the devil himself were running.

Falwell said in a telephone interview that his comments to several hundred pastors and religious activists at the "Value Voter Summit" conference were "totally tongue-in-cheek."

"I certainly hope that Hillary is the candidate," Falwell said at a breakfast session Friday in Washington. "I hope she's the candidate, because nothing will energize my (constituency) like Hillary Clinton," he said. "If Lucifer ran, he wouldn't."

Clinton press secretary Philippe Reines said Sunday, "Working for someone who believes in the Golden Rule, we're not going to engage in such vitriolic discourse — but it seems that a new low has been reached in demonizing political opponents."

1. Is the corporate media
going to go on and on for days about this like they did about the Chavez remarks about their dear little leader?

:grr:

6. This is not a wiseguy question: how sane is Falwell?
I know that a lot of you guys will immediately call him insane because of his beliefs. My question involves his competency, his ability to discern something close to basic reality.

You may recall that Oral Roberts has been kind of "put away" since his incredibly stupid comments that God would "take him home" if he didn't raise $2 million in contributions. I also recall he said he saw a "hundred foot Jesus." (A measurement that no human could make by eye standing the base of such an image without some kind of tools. Also, Jesus's mouth would be about 97 feet above Roberts; how would he hear Him?)

A lot of these older evangelists, the heart of the Christian Right, seem to be pretty old and pretty addled. Guess that business of faith healing versus medicine hasn't really helped them.

So, I'm wondering...is Falwell in the mental state where, in a more enlightened age, he would be locked up in the attic with a radio and a walker and only let downstairs to associate with people at Thanksgiving and Christmas?

14. I think Oral's Jesus was NINE hundred feet tall
Otherwise, OR struck me as a (relatively) benign lunatic. There's nothing benign about Falwell.

16. And if Falwell is a lunatic and NOT benign?
What would he have to do to make people realize he's really, really nuts? In Falwell's case, I'm not sure him killing someone in passion - or even cold blood - would be enough to turn his congregation against him. That's what bothers me, and makes me wonder exactly how insane he is.

8. This brings up an interesting point...
Warning...off on another silly tangent :silly:

If Bush is the devil according to Chavez-
And Hillary Clinton is the devil according to Foulwell-

Where do we put our bets down for the cage match?

TWO DEVILS ENTER! ONE DEVIL LEAVES!

9. Well, regardless of what happens, I won't vote for her in the primaries
Precisely because I don't want to deal with a super-energized Republican base.

10. Jerry Falwell is worse than the devil
Really, anyone who thinks a politician was "appointed by Jesus" should be considered mentally deranged and locked away in a maximum security mental facility.

15. it goes without saying that
Falwell makes a fool out of his Party and the condemnation of Chavezs remarks about bush by saying the exact same thing about Hilay but...isn't it JUST so ironic the response or lack thereof in the media!??

17. So has anyone asked any of these Hillary Clinton haters
what exactly it is they hate about her? What has she done? Aborted babies? Committed adultery? Is she a lesbian? Did she shirk her military duty? I mean all the the above seem to be all that the Christian right condemns candidates for. She hasn't done any of those things. Or is it that she's married to Bill Clinton?

Really, I don't get it. I sometimes have issues with Hillary because she's too conservative for me, but I don't hate her and I certainly don't consider her to be in league with the devil. What is it with these wackos? You can't just accuse someone of sin and evil if there is no evidence.

18. What a worthless oxygen-stealer he is, was and always will be...
He has been spewing hate and injecting poison into the national dialogue for decades now. Granted, nobody pays him as much attention now as they used to, but he's still a boil on the ass of humanity.

To borrow a quote from the play Richard III (and the movie V for Vendetta): "And thus I clothe my naked villainy/With old odd ends, stol'n forth of holy writ;/And seem a saint, when most I play the devil" - that's Falwell in a nutshell. (A real NUTshell)
