You can probably guess my profession by the response. I keep wondering this: why do we try so hard to teach students to disagree respectfully, to resolve conflict constructively, etc., at school, when the general American culture outside the school grounds doesn't support those values? No wonder young people don't necessarily relate. They often comply, but it doesn't become a part of who they are. Respect has become an endangered species in modern American culture. I don't mean respect for abhorrent ideas and actions, but respect in the way we interact with others whether we like them, agree with them, or not.

That is the quote from The Shawshank Redemption that stuck in my mind when I read those comments from right wingers regarding Olbermann. Either the things that Keith said was well over their heads or they are purposefully missing the points that he was making (I vote for the latter). They prove time and time again that they can't fight the facts so they build strawmen which they can kick the shit out of (ie - the person who claimed that Keith's comments were some sort of insult to the military and their families). Now that more and more people are starting to wake up and see through their nonsense, they simply resort to childish name calling. It's sick and sad.
