New Orleans Saints Game
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 07:37 PM by AnnieBW
Looking in the audience...

I see white people. :(

At least Reggie Bush is the only Bush that New Orleanians seem to want around!

1. I saw some blacks in the stands. Ditto on Reggie Bush.

2. White people in New Orleans. A shame! A travesty! A scandal!
...That's how you meant it, or that just how it came off...?

3. I never thought I'd see this on DU

It's astonishing how casual the racism is in this topic post.

13. No racism about it - season ticket holders overwhelmingly white & well-off
That is certainly the case with the new, pre-sold Baseball stadium in a formerly-working class part of Washington, DC.

Funny how people were so reluctant to cry "race!" at the height of Katrina, but when the disparities are right under their nose, they persist in imagining that the Superdome and the French Quarter are Ahat's Important To All New Orleanians...

4. Ummm... I've been to a lot of Falcons Saints games....
You mean they got a replacement?

Wow! There's black people there as well! What a concept!

:sarcasm:

6. HW Bush is doing the coin toss. Do I hear a smattering of boos?

9. George Herbert Walker Bush is the reason I became a Democrat.
And yet, I look at him and think, "At least he was presidential."

How far we have fallen...

10. Dolby picked it up!
And the applause wasn't as loud as you would expect for a game like this... Hell, they'll bring the roof down for a well dressed hot dog!

I did not hear one boo for President George H. W. Bush (#41) there just now.

Not one boo.

Edit: Someone above me seems to have heard some. Huh. I didn't.

12. Actually, I DID hear some boos when they focused on him, specifically.
Not overbearing, yet still there.

17. I completely apologize! ESPN fooled me by faking the audio!
I thought I might've heard something during the coin toss but couldn't make it out clearly - because the biggest boos during the introduction were whitewashed with pre-recorded applause!

I am disgusted, and while not really of any fault of my own, I admit that I was completely wrong. Though I still think the 'I see dead-- er-- white people' part was a trifle unwise for how it came off, but that's total nitpicking at this point.

8. I'm still in tears (happy ones)
It's a beautiful thing to see the Superdome where people are not in misery and instead are celebrating. The stands are full and the crowd is roaring.

More revenue, more jobs and more hope will mean more people able to go home and rebuild.

Beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.

Tonight New Orleans is shining :)

Go Saints Go!

11. I'm a long time Atlanta fan and it had me in tears as well...
Either way it goes, you're gonna see a heartfelt game. These are serious rivals for a long time.

14. Folks, the Saints are great but please, please do not think
That "revenue and jobs" are generated by the football team.

Every economist that has done a study on the subject agrees that even in New Orleans, with its oppressive low-wage service/tourism economy perfectly suited to hosting a Superdome, that is not the case. They cost more (money for team owners) than the revenue & wages they generate, including secondary impacts.

16. Perhaps in a normal situation
But this is far from that. Something like this is bringing people back into the city, to the resteraunts and bars and hotels. Yes service jobs might be low wages, but right now it is a start. A year ago it was a ghost town filled with misery, broken dreams and death and NO jobs.

You cannot rebuild your businesses if no one is there spending money.

This is a unique situation and the baby steps need to be celebrated. This is a happy night.

The superdome is more then just Football.

15. Did not mean to insult
I was just surprised that there weren't more African-Americans in the stands. I guess I didn't realize the dynamics of the situation.

I should just keep my damn mouth shut today.

And yeah, I did hear some boos for Poppy. Probably booing his wife and spawn more than him.

18. See my post #17 - I didn't realize, ESPN tampered with the audio!
Hence my gut reaction. ...Tampering with audio ain't right, just IMHO. This isn't an equipment malfunction.
