Amnesty International 'Deeply Disturbed' by New Detainee Legislation
"The core of the public debate between senior Republican leaders and the administration largely hinged on the president's ability to interpret the Geneva Conventions as he saw fit and as he basically granted himself authority to do in the war on terror. Key Senators argued, rightly, that the Conventions must stay intact. Yet, in the alleged 'win-win' compromise, it appears that the president can reinterpret the Conventions, amend the War Crimes Act and even give a greenlight to treatment long- considered torture. Without additional clarity, the proposed agreement betrays American values of justice and long-held agreements and obligations on basic humane treatment. There can be no compromise for torture."

1. You're not likely to get much sympathy here..
when all you have is an AI report.

When you post the AI reports about abuse in Venezuela or Cuba they are laughed off and brushed aside like AI is a Karl Rove mouthpiece.

2. I have other opinions on the "compromise"
but I think people on DU know America tortures and that Bush wants it legal now.

5. I watched the Senate session today and it dragged on and on
and on, with many many "interludes", complete with musak from C-Span. They adjourned without getting to the detainee bill - though it was on "today's schedule"

There was a hearing prior to the session where "minor changes...nothing that changed the substance" were made to the "compromise" (quoting Frist here)

I'll watch again tomorrow...it will be 3 or 4 PM my time.
