Some Sobering Statistics
So, I was looking at icasualties.org and began to wonder what age group is suffering the greatest losses. The numbers only add up to 2694 'cause some info has not been released. My numbers only reflect American troops. Here goes:
Years of age = number of fatalities

  • 18 = 25
  • 19 = 156
  • 20 = 282
  • 21 = 341
  • 22 = 269
  • 23 = 192
  • 24 = 171
  • 25 = 152
  • 26 = 134
  • 27 = 112
  • 28 = 99
  • 29 = 82
  • 30 = 77
  • >30 = 602

Percentage of Total Fatalities*
18 to 21 year olds represent 29.8%
22 to 25 year olds represent 29.1%
26 to 30 year olds represent 18.7%
31 years old and older represent 22%

*does not equal 100% due to rounding

Your thoughts.....................?

3. Can't comment on the Iraqi portion of your post.
But the US numbers seem about right, and both the age and ethnicity info for the US deaths have been pretty consistent since '03, when the numbers were much, much lower (the ethnicity info was in your post, the one you linked to). They make sense, given a slightly different set of assumptions.

I believe that DUer lynnthedem is with an organization that's maintained a running total since '03. If there are no deaths for a few days, the DOD and her organization are within 2 or 3 of each other (if the deaths pile up more quickly, her organization posts them to the official count faster than the official DOD count, IIRC).

2. If these are accurate, and I doubt it, it means that more young
soldiers are out and about getting hit by the street bombs. They are also less likely to be in stripes, less able to protect themselves and probably more often guardsmen. It means if you're 21 or so, you're a target. Period.

4. There are more young soldiers & young officers.
As you said they are inexperienced, but proportionality dictates the low age bulge, The old age bulge is the IRR. It sux anyway one figures it.
