Did Larry Sabato just drive a stake through the heart of the Allen ...
Senatorial campaign?

"I KNOW that George Allen used the N word." Larry was born in Virginia and teaches at Allen's alma mater. If macaca boy wants to go up against possibly the pre-eminent political scientist (and a right-leaning one at that) in the Commonwealth of Virginia, then he's going to need more than some cowboy boots and a horse named Bubba.

2. Sabato can be believed on this
Not on personal issues of his, but yeah -- I'd believe him on things like this.

4. I lived in VA for years and got tired of Sabato. But what was the context
Yes, I generally believe him here too.

But what was the context of his comment?

17. The context was...
...verifying this article on salon.com.

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/09/24/allen_football/index.html

Sabato was adamant that Allen had used the "N" word. Matthews pumped him about whether he had ever heard him use it, but he wouldn't say. He refused to say whether he had heard it or not and became agitated when pressed.

Sabato is right-wing. There's no reason for him to lie about this.

22. He's being kind of coy here. Some folks here say he knew him at UVA...
but, my instincts are to believe him also since he leans right.

Did they really know each other at UVA? Does anyone know about that?

24. I would love to find out.
"Coy" is putting it mildly. Sabato tiptoed right up to stating that he personally heard Allen say the N-word.

25. They both graduated from UVA in 1974.
Considering the political path that Larry chose and the fact that George went on to lead the "Young Virginians for Ronald Reagan" group, I'd say the odds are pretty damn high they knew each other.

After he received his B.A. in government from the University of Virginia as a Phi Beta Kappa in 1974, he did a year's graduate study in public policy at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

http://www.centerforpolitics.org/about/staff_sabato.htm

And this:

Allen attended the University of California, Los Angeles for a year before transferring to the University of Virginia, in 1971, where he received a B.A. degree with distinction in history in 1974. He was class president in his senior year at UVA.

After graduating, Allen completed a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1977. In 1976 he was the chairman of the "Young Virginians for Ronald Reagan". Allen was a supporter of Richard Nixon and the Vietnam War, although he did not serve in that conflict, taking a student deferment instead.<8>

Yes, I know it's Wikipedia, but I'm short on time. I'm sure other DU'ers can come up with other sources to back it up.

31. Ahhh, they attended when it was all male. Hmmmm...
UVA had its first female students in '73.

Yes, THE University of Virginia did not admit women until 1973.

Virginia is great at that institutionalized bigotry thingie...

3.  I truly believe this is blatantly obvious
I mean WTF? The man had a Confederate flag on display and was known for disparaging minorities. Why in the hell wouldn't he say the N word? It would be miraculous if he HAD NOT!

11. Has any one asked if he still has that confederate flag?
ANd if not when did he dispose of it and did he simply throw it away.

There is no way to slice and dice a win-win without pissing off someone.

I hope his gay lover comes out and outs this bufoon soon!!! Anyone who can insult another human being as macaca sure has used the N-word profusely.

I believe Larry Sabato and Allen were at UVA as students at the same time. I think i heard that before.

34. I doubt a gay lover will surface, but there is an ex-wife and
sealed divorce records. My understanding is (and this comes from a source who knew George and the first Mrs. Allen), that he was not the most faithful of husbands.

23. Right-leaning - He has been speaking to executive groups all over
the country for years. My b-i-l had lunch with about a dozen heavyhitters in Ohio and came back bragging that Sabato gave them inside scoop on election 2000.

His prediction was that Bush would be winning and SHOULD win because he'd be the better president, but, that Gore would likely win because of the debates. At the time the debates hadn't yet occurred.

This was no centrist talking. He was speaking to influential business men and he does this all over the country. They do it in intimate groups to make them feel they are "in" on it with BushInc.

Virginia is not a Black and white state. The Asian population in the urban areas is growing Very very fast. I am not sure what percentage is registered to vote but those that are won't be voting for Macaca-man.

so big that you cannot win the state as a Republican without at least carrying Loudon county and blunting the Democratic onslaught out of Fairfax and Arlington.

14. I think so. That conversation - when Chris asked him directly if he has
heard Allen use the word and Larry refused to answer yet was adamant that Allen has used the word - the conclusion was obvious to me - Larry has personally heard him say the "n" word or essentially something very similar.

30. It sounded like he was hinting that there would be more to come out...

I find it hard to believe that someone of his political stature would come out and make the accusation without having something behind him. Maybe he knows that some kind of proof is on the way.
