Specter to press for detainees' habeas corpus rights

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A leading Republican senator on Monday said he will fight to give detainees the right to challenge their imprisonment, creating a new potential obstacle for legislation President George W. Bush wants in order to try terrorism suspects.i Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said he would join Democrats working to amend a bill setting up trial procedures for foreign terrorism suspects that Republican leaders are trying to push through Congress this week.

1. Good one! I needed the comic relief.
Specter is posturing again, nothing more. He'll be towing the BushCo line by sundown Wednesday.

4. Anyone who has faith in that man is going to be disapointed.
He's putting a thin coating of illusion on the party to make it look like they stand up for something other than greed and power.

6. Not to worry. Republicans will guard your civil rights...
No, really. And they'll protect your job too. In fact, there's really no need for a loyal opposition.

9. He's already got his knee pads out!
Words that do not belong in the same sentence: Specter and (a) spine, (b) principle. Unless the word "not" is in there.

Specter will cave even faster than McCain, Graham, and Warner. Putting party ahead of country. Damn shame.
