Bring back the draft, but not one of the usual kind...
We can draft people to serve in the government and reduce the amount of money that needs to be spent on employees, and use that money to help those serving in Iraq. In other words we would begin a hiring freeze for all parts of the US Government, then we would use the selective service system to conscript young men, and with an amendment to the system, young women, to fulfill the functions of the US Government. This will allow Americans to help out with the war effort, but not force them to make the highest gift to our nation, something that one must decide oneself. We will be able to pay troops more money and at the same time increase the quality of their equipment.

What do you think of this?

1. better we should use these "draftees" to replace the
contractors that the Gov hires at top dollar (as a favor to their corpo friends) to do jobs that civil servants used to do at reasonable rates....

You want to force people to work for the federal government/war effort (any branch in particular, or just the executive?) in order to save money? Um, where would the cost savings come from? They will still have to be paid. And *exactly* what jobs are you thinking these people must fill?

4. I think it is HORRIBLE, frankly
I know everyone makes fun of civil servants, and I used to, myself. But as I moved up the military ladder I had quite a few of them working for me. For every lazyass bum, there are a bunch of hard workers in the group. Some were flat-out BRILLIANT. And plenty of them are DEMOCRATS.

If you did something like this, not that it would be possible, a huge percentage of the population of DC would be thrown out of work, to say nothing of those working at bases and installations and service centers around the nation. They'd need unemployment insurance. Many are too old to find a decent job that would pay them what they are making, or would use the specific skills they've acquired in their military support roles.

What you're basically saying is to toss the geezers out on their asses, and give the jobs to young folks without background in the tasks, some of which are fairly complex. Bad idea. Knowledge comes with experience.

And where would you house these people? Buy up the foreclosed homes of the civil servants and convert them to barracks???

7. I think you may have lost your fucking mind
Are you suggesting drafting people and forcing them to work GRATIS? Over a war you know damn well is bullshit?

Or are you one of those people who is attempting to fight totalitarianism with totalitarianism?

Either way, your post stinks. I suggest a checkup from the neckup.

slavery, pure & simple, and an idea unworthy of liberals and progressives.

Not to mention the union-busting aspect of it.
