Schumer, Emanuel Help Democrats Blunt Republicans' Money Edge

By Kristin Jensen

Sept. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Hedge-fund manager Richard Chilton has given thousands of dollars to Republicans since 2002, including President George W. Bush and several state parties. This year, he also contributed $15,000 to New York Senator Charles Schumer's Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

``I don't give to Democrats,'' says Chilton, chairman of Chilton Investment Co. in Stamford, Connecticut. ``I give to Chuck Schumer.''

By tapping Wall Street and relentlessly dialing for dollars, Schumer, 55, has built up an $11 million cash edge over Republicans to benefit Democratic Senate candidates nationwide. His intensity is matched on the other side of the U.S. Capitol by Illinois Representative Rahm Emanuel, 46, who has brought House Democrats almost to parity with Republicans.

Schumer's and Emanuel's efforts have helped blunt the $28 million advantage the Republican National Committee holds over its Democratic counterpart. While the RNC is planning to use that cash to pay for an advertising and get-out-the-vote blitz, Democrats say the issues favor them.

1. They also help force the progressive candidates out
By fundraising and having speakers do events for the moderate/centrist DLC types BEFORE the primary.

AND they railed against Howard Dean's efforts to make Democrats viable in all 50 states which is a must if we want to gain and retain power in the future.

Frankly Schumer can kiss my ass. The last thing we need is some Washington centrist stiff picking our candidates for us.

3. I agree
The money Scumer raises doesn't help if he requires candidates to use the same consultants that help Democrats lose elections year after year.
