Good book about the NSA
Chatter: Dispatches from the Secret World of Global Eavesdropping by Patrick Radden Keefe

Not as methodical as Bamford's books on the NSA. Keefe comes forward with the revelation that NSA has been sying on the U.S. Congress for years.

1. I read that a while back...
and found it to be interesting... but the author seemed too aware of political assignations, having his analysis favor political neutrality over clarity.

2. The NSA lost its mission when the Cold War ended
and should have been disbanded the week the Berlin Wall fell. It wasn't.

That alone should tell you what "mission creep" can do to an agency whose original mission was very clearly spelled out.

Deprived of the monolith of communism, they had to look elsewhere for a reason to exist.

They looked to us.
