spend more time with their families?Just reported on CNN...3rd AD was scheduled to go,but apparently hadn't had one year home...so 1st AD had their tour extended..this is being spun as a humanitarian gesture.

1. Course it doesn't matter
That the 3rd is under strength due to men being re-assigned to other spots, lacking much of it's equipment either because it's being repurposed or is wore out, and is in no way fit for active deployment.

Yeah right
I just yesterday finished reading how one of the 3rd AD's brigades had only just begun training, in Georgia, rather than California, because they can't even afford to spend the time and money to move their gear to Fort Irwin. There's a mad scramble to get this brigade ready. Sounds like word was passed up that there would be an immense difference in readiness between "11" months and "12" months here.

2. Or maybe the 3rd ID is not ready yet
The equipment might be busted up. Training might not be complete. Units might not be passing readiness evaluations.

6. I think it's the 3rd Infantry not 3rd Armored
The 3rd Armored Division was deactivated after the Gulf War as part of a general drawing down of forces. As of 2006 the official strength is zero, but it is not inactive.

The 3rd ID is stationed at Ft. Stewart Georgia, and while Ft. Irwin is the prime location for desert
warfare training, there are training areas located at Ft. Stewart.

7. Awesome IO campaign run on americans by the Regime
Don't think of this as screwing the guys in Iraq by extending them, but by giving the guys at home more down time...

Hey it's only another 849 deployment days until 20 Jan 2009! Which means only another 2 maybe 3 deployments. Gosh it'll just be to bad that day won't be the "drawdown" day...
