Peace march in Kansas City today - pictures
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 12:06 AM by proud2Blib
We walked through The Plaza, an upscale shopping district, carrying stretchers that had boots on them. There was one pair for each soldier killed in Iraq from Kansas and Missouri.

We also carried coffins.

We marched for 6 blocks.

The police watched us march.

While the shoppers shopped.

Some took pictures of us.

After the march, we went to a nearby park where we laid the boots out on the ground.

We also had shoes representing the Iraqis who have died.

These boots had the name of a soldier my friend knew.

This man's son died in Iraq 18 months ago.

There were also posters all around the park. The described the cost of the war in tax dollars to both MO and KS.

We had a program with several speakers.

There were lots of neat signs.

And the media was there.

16. We did a civil liberties march there earlier in the day and the cops
threw us out of the area where the art fair was going on. They said it was private property. Last I checked, those were city sidewalks. The cops were assholes. I asked if I could walk by myself thru the sidewalks and he said 'no, not with that sign'. Freedom of speech is truly dead, guys. Asswipe cops.

Maybe they lost the chroma key and had to find it.

24. Well, lets see.
What it has to do with the thread is that they have one picture of a bored "reporter". Where's the news cameras? Where's the local radio? If it's such a big event, and KS is a big city with large local news outlets, then where were they? You want to call it a successful march, then get the media exposure. One uninterested intern isn't media coverage.

Anyone check the local stations or newspapers for coverage?

Care to provide a link to the news outlets that had coverage?

Like I said, Obituaries and classifieds.

If you want to make a difference, then get the media there. But make sure you get more that 15 people to participate.

25. LOL! There were a lot more than 15 people there.
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 10:31 AM by proud2Blib
A whole lot more. We had 15 stretchers each carried by 2 people, plus a bunch of those coffins. There were at least 100 people in our march. We had names of over 100 soldiers and everyone marching had a name around their neck. Since I was participating, it was hard for me to get a picture of the group. I had to settle for street crossings, etc.

Yes of course we called the media. How do you think that reporter got there? :eyes:

We always call them. We do an event like this once a month. And we always call and email the media. But calling them does not get them there. Have you ever worked with media? Because you sure are good at barking out orders and telling us what to do. Does this mean you have some valuable experience to share? If not and you just want to criticize what we DID do yesterday while 99% of the USA (including YOU probably) sat on their rear ends and watched football, then why not just trot along to another thread?

I would welcome you to DU but I find your initial post about the rudest I have ever read from a newbee. Post some pictures of what YOU have done to end this war and I will apologize.

P.S. My question you answered was not directed at you and you didn't answer it anyway.

37. No not Kansas
Missouri. Kansas City.

I believe it is better to do SOMETHING than nothing. And if that something looks like a coffee klatsch to you, then so be it.

We had 500+ at our protest two weeks ago when el pretzeldente came to town. So we can put it together when necessary.

There were also a bunch of DUers who spent a lot of time putting this march together yesterday. The stretchers were hand made and painted and we spent hours tying the name on every pair of shoes.

47. Where are the
100 people that took place in the KS protest? And who said I protested?? I never did. You assume I did. I provide the coverage of your protests. I've covered numerous WCW events, plus peace marches and various protests. I get it on the air so people can hear the message. I've also worked alongside Indy media many times.

So, I do my part. Just don't try inflating numbers when they're not there. Makes the movement look like a bunch of idiots that can't count and organize.

Try to get that one basic fact right, OK?
I didn't say you protested. I made no assumptions. I'm glad you're getting coverage out there. But, since you present yourself as some kind of authority, I just wanted to see your idea of a successful protest.
But you're getting nowhere by denigrating other peoples' actions.
The numbers aren't inflated; the photos simply don't show the entire group in one shot.

and I didn't have access to a boom so I could get an overhead shot and I am sorry I didn't insist on having the protesters wear numbers so you could easily verify the number of people there. OR maybe I should have just hired a pro to take the pictures for me.

Actually since you are such an expert, you should move here and help our media do a better job of covering the local protesters. :eyes:

71. Did you hear about this Indy media dude? Friend of yours?
Liberal bloggers in New Hampshire busted an aide to Rep. Charles Bass (R-N.H.) who was posing as a liberal blogger on such blogs as Blue Granite, NH-02 Progressive and others. Bass’ office admitted culpability to HOH and said the staffer would be “appropriately disciplined.”

The unnamed aide to Bass — who, like many others in his party, faces a tough re-election fight — was routinely trolling liberal New Hampshire political blogs calling himself “IndyNH” and more commonly IndieNH, pretending to be a progressive.

You weren't there. I didn't say there was "media coverage," and it's true that there often is none. We are constantly disappointed in the lack of press coverage. There were two events this year in town that attracted the media. Two. But, that doesn't change the facts of what occurred, and it certainly doesn't mean that there aren't other events. Perhaps you'd like to visit KC with one of your top 20 media outlets to do a story on local activism. We would be no more or less validated as a result. I see no reason for you to come into this thread and tear it down as you have.

edit:
According to this site, Columbus ranks behind KC in media markiets.

63. The claims are accurate.
Granted, the photos don't back it up, but they are from the point of view of a participant, not from the top of a building. Too bad, I guess. I'm obviously not going to change your mind. None of us go into these things with an overwhelming need to prove to other DUers that it actually happened.
This isn't about me. I'm just trying to defend my friend. I said nothing about denying your right to free speech. I disagree with you because I know what happened.
We wish we could get more coverage. Our local network affiliates are about as bad as most others in mid-sized markets. If it bleeds, it leads.
I invite you to visit sometime and meet some of us. Maybe we can convince you that we're not a bunch of prevaricators trying to pump ourselves up for others to see.

39. Sorry if I was snarky
I have had a few too many weird replies on DU the past few days.

As for Chang's, I went there one time and thought the food was good but someone else was paying. No way can I afford to go there otherwise :)

We do go to M&S Grill after we protest on Sundays. They have $1.99 appetizers. And they are good.

56. Go KC!
I used to live there a couple of times and most of my family is now there or really close, like Lee's Summit. *Sigh*. I miss the activism there. You guys rock! :yourock: :headbang:

82.  Thank you for posting this
It takes time and dedication to protest . I can't imagine as peaceful as it looks why they had to have police there at all other than to stop traffic .

What troubles me is the lack of interest by the public and why more people don't join in . This just indicates to me how people just go on with their lives until they are hit by something like a lost friend or family member or a lost job .

83. Yes it blows my mind
that the football game draws 80,000 while we are lucky some Sundays to get 20.
