I think the pope just put his foot in his mouth again.
Pope praises slain Italian nun for pardoning her killers

Pope Benedict XVI has praised an Italian nun for pardoning her killers as she lay dying in Somalia from an attack that may have been linked to Muslim anger over his remarks about Islam and violence.

(snip)

"This nun … died pronouncing the word 'pardon,' " the Pope told pilgrims during his traditional Sunday noon appearance.

"This is the most authentic Christian testimony … which shows the victory of love over hate and evil."

1. He does have a way with words
doesn't he? The scary part is this asshole is supposedly omnipotent.

2. Not omnipotent. Infallible. . .
but then, only when speaking ex cathedra.

Significant difference.

And Catholics, too!

3. come on, already, the Rat was just cleaning his toe-nails.
Of course, he knew exactly what she said.

reminds me of a story my brain was being rinsed with when I attended a x-tian skule at the age of 11.
A car loaded with nuns had a one car accident, crashed, burned, and caused the deaths of all 6 penguin-dressed virgins. The next week, the priest had the gall to stand up in my class and instruct us that each and every one of them had been saying their lord's prayer just before the crash.

Being an early rabble rouser, I asked two questions:
a) how could anyone know if there were no survivors,
b) if they were praying so well and so hard, why did they die? Didn't it seem as thought prayer did not matter, since so many other drivers made it past the curve without an accident?

I was not a favored student in grade skule.

18. Might have been better if only 5 had been praying. . .
while one drove. But that's just me wondering outloud. . .

4. What's wrong with saying that?
Sorry.

Not trying to be argumentative here. Forgiveness is taught as a trait that Christians should have, and he was noting her forgiveness.

I mean, whoever shot her must have had hate and be evil. Come on, who shoots a nun?

5. Agree with you on that
What the hell is wrong with showing an act of kindness with your last breath??

Sheesh, methinks some folks have gotten their shorts on too tight at times :)

7. Maybe if you'd waited a moment for me to clarify...
(See post #6)

I don't disagree with you at all--except for the part about having my shorts on too tight, of course.

:)

6. It was in the way I read what he said.
He equates "authentic Christian testimony" with love and being victorious "over hate and evil".

Rightly or wrongly, some will take that as a reference to Islam. Unless there was more context, but I'm just going by what AP reported.

8. I'd say it's obvious he's talking about the murder, not Islam
and no-one can seriously take his words as being about Islam in this case. While I think he was either astoundingly dumb, or purposely offensieve, in his original speech, I think he's on safe ground with this.

10. Nun is no better than anyone else. Popie caused it by igniting
further hatred with statements he knew or should have known would cause further violence.

11. Yeah, that would be like Bush sending a soldier to die in an
unnecessary war, which he said would be just a comma in history, and then telling the mother of the dead soldier, "I'm very sorry, ma'am. Now watch this drive."

12. What the Pope said
is in line with ancient and fundamental theology and morality concerning Christian martyrdom, around since Christ founded the Church with Peter and the martyrdom of Stephen. It is also in contrast with the ethos of the other two Abrahamic religions, both of which still adhere to "an eye for an eye". Some here seem very intent on attacking the Pope and the Church no matter what is said. While the present Pope was still Cardinal Ratzinger he was as much opposed to the illegal, immoral, and unConstitutional attack on Iraq as John Paul II was. The Vatican denounced the latest Israeli aggression, and should they be asked, they will be against the illegal, immoral, unConstitutional, and unChristian planned nuclear devastation of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Unjustified criticism of the Pope and the Church, and Catholic morality, will cause many to decide whether they need to choose between the Church, and a particular political party.

16. I disagree
He made a good point.

What should the nun have done, say, "And fuck alls y'all!"

Her murderers were evil, OBVIOUSLY, and she forgave them. That is not the same thing as saying all Muslims are evil, just her killers.

Witlesses: Hooray, she said to Pardon her killers! JC rocks, folks!
