Weekly Standard: Allen Lost the Debate (to Webb) Soundly.

When a conservative publication puts you on the cover with a monkey, and the article makes the monkey look better, you can kiss your Presidential aspirations goodbye..
<snip>
Fifth Quarter's early chapters focus on Jennifer's life as an 8-year-old in a testosterone-heavy household--featuring George as well as brothers Greg and Bruce. Jennifer spent most of her time alone in her walk-in closet, "my only quiet and private place in the house." It is clear she lived in fear of her oldest brother George and his friends, who "had the same pork-chop sideburns, greasy-haired scalps, and almost the same broken-toothed look as the inmates on George's favorite album, Johnny Cash, Live from Folsom Prison." In one oft-quoted passage, Jennifer Allen writes:

"We all obeyed George. If we didn't, we knew he would kill us. Once, when Bruce refused to go to bed, George hurled him through a sliding glass door. Another time, when Gregory refused to go to bed, George tackled him and broke his collarbone. Another time, when I refused to go to bed, George dragged me up the stairs by my hair. George hoped someday to become a dentist. George said he saw dentistry as a perfect profession--getting paid to make people suffer."

<snip>
Then the moment passed. On September 17, Allen debated Webb on NBC's Meet the Press. The consensus among Washington Republicans was that Allen lost the debate soundly. Dean Barnett, a conservative blogger, wrote on radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt's website that, "for conservatives wishing for Allen to retain his seat, their best hope is that Virginians were otherwise occupied this morning or that the state's NBC outlets were having technical difficulties." Allen's positions were muddled. He refused to say whether he supported the president's or Sen. McCain's stance on terrorist interrogations. He refused to say whether he would serve a full term if reelected to the Senate.

<snip>
Webb adviser Jarding says the race will come down to money, and that if the Democrat raises enough to reach near parity with Allen on the air, he will win. In the race this is becoming, however, money may be less important than usual. So far, free media have dominated the campaign--the stories on macaca, the Lumbrosos, and so on--and this will only continue if Allen keeps performing as badly as he has in recent weeks. If nothing changes, November 7 is sure to be the defining test of Allen's three-decade-long political career. If he fails, it will be only partly because the Virginia that captured his heart as a young man is slowly vanishing. Mainly it will be because of Allen himself.

Please consider donating to Webb and help shut Allen down for good.

Life is good.

2. more fun: Sen. Allen's Diet of Pork Chops, Ham Sandwiches and Crow

Sen. Allen's Diet of Pork Chops, Ham Sandwiches and Crow
<snip>
"Somehow, we've careened from a volley of apologies -- I'm sorry I called that nice man "macaca"; no, I'm sorry I said women were pathetic weaklings; no, I wish I'd known earlier in life that hanging a noose in my law office was a bad thing -- to wild accusations of anti-Semitism in a race in which both candidates are Christians and in a state with a tiny Jewish population."

<snip>
But this is not a simple matter of the senator learning the truth and admitting it. He was clearly sensitive about this subject long before Channel 9 reporter Peggy Fox asked him about it at Monday's Fairfax Chamber of Commerce debate. Three years ago, Bob Gibson, political columnist at the Charlottesville Daily Progress, asked the same question. "It's funny," Gibson told the New Republic last month, "but the only time that George Allen ever wanted a correction from me in 27 years of covering his races was when I wrote about his mother's Jewish family origins. He insisted, through a press secretary, that his mother was raised a Christian."

<snip>
Somehow, Madeline Albright, John Kerry and Wesley Clark -- who learned details of their Jewish roots in middle age -- got through this chapter without accusing their opponents of anti-Semitism, ripping reporters who inquired about their family histories or cracking ham sandwich jokes.

Allen is a tremendously likable guy. He stands up for his beliefs, even when they are unpopular. But he's in trouble in a race he expected to be a walk in the park. And he's killing himself out there. Georgie, baby, take a shvitz, maybe a vacation. Have you thought about Jerusalem? Bring the video camera. We can make this work.

13. Thanks, the question is..
"Should he win this senate race?" And the answer is a big fat "NO!" allen shouldn't win because he's a sublevel neocon who will say anything to further his political career not to further the Well Fare of the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia or the people of the United States of America. allen is Constitution Shredder and a Liar.

6. Maybe it's not too late to go to dentist's school
Perhaps he was the model for Steve Martin's character in Little Shop of Horrors.

When I was younger, just a bad little kid,
My mama noticed funny things I did,
Like shootin' puppies with a B B gun
I'd poison guppies, and when I was done
I'd find a pussycat and bash in its head
That's when my mama said

What did she say?

She said, "My boy, I think someday
You'll find a way
To make your natural tendencies pay
You'll be a dentist
You have a talent for causin' things pain
Son, be a dentist
People will pay you to be inhumane
Your temperament's wrong for the priesthood
And teaching would suit you still less
Son, be a dentist
You'll be a success

Here he is, folks the leader of the plaque!
Watch him suck up that gas!
Oh, my god!
He's a dentist and he'll never ever be any good
Who wants their teeth done by the Marquis de Sade?

Oh that hurts! I'm not numb!

Oh, shut up. Open wide. here I come!
I am your dentist

Goodness gracious!

And I enjoy the career that I picked

Really love it

I am your dentist

Fitting braces

And I get off on the pain I inflict

Really love it

I thrill when I drill a bicuspid

Bicuspid

It's swell though they tell me I'm maladjusted
And though it may cause my patients distress,
Somewhere, somewhere in heaven above me
I know, I know, that my mama's proud of me
Oh, mama
'Cause I'm a dentist and a success
Say ah!

9. Allen has gone from a frontrunner for the 2008
repuke nomination - dumb guy named George with famous father - to a never ran because of his own character flaws - racism he couldn't keep hidden and a Jewish heritage he denied and then acted indignant about. According to her own account, after telling him about her Jewish lineage, his mother asked "Do you still love me?" Are those the words of an elderly woman afraid the world will learn her secret, or one afraid her racist, anti-semitic son will disown her in part because she's just cost him a lot of freeper votes?

Virginians have learned this election cycle that George Allen, the affable good-old-boy, isn't who they thought he was. The question remains whether they want to send the real George Allen - the one who publically belittled a man with a racial slur, the one with a noose in the office, the one with a son named for a KKK founder, the one who denied his heritage out of fear of losing the freeper vote - back to the Senate. It will be an interesting election night in Virginia.

10. Allen's dumb attack ad
Just saw an ad attacking Webb. The ad contains little content, it merely questions Webb's credentials as a Reaganite. It mentions that Reagan would not have supported someone who called him a fool, and that Reagan would not have approved of Webb not listening to his widow, Nancy.

Ok, let's go there, how does a Republican think?
Reagan would also not have supported a congress who voted for such enormous increases in government spending and pork, a congress that created an entirely new layer of beaurocracy in the DHS, and a congress that expanded social spending with the prescription drug benefit
Reagan would not have respected such a limp-wristed response to Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan/Pakistan.
Reagan argued for state's rights - a point neglected with federal government intrusion into Terry Schiavo, the Supreme Court's decision in Bush vs Gore, the "no child left behind" act
Reagan argued to "get government off our backs", yet we have a congress pushing for the Federal Marriage Amendment and a president spying on American's phone calls.

...but then again, Reagan was never consistent between his actions and his rhetoric either.

I haven't seen that many ads overall, they must be waiting for later. Then again, my TV watching is not really representative.

21. I think it depends on where you are...
I'm in Maryland, DC, parts of Maryland, and Northern Virginia all share the same network broadcasts. I haven't seen many commercials from Webb, but Northern Virginia leans democratic. When I was on vacation in North Carolina, we were picking up Norfolk, VA TV stations, and the ads were heavy.

20. Virginia is a changing state. The George Allen who was elected...
Governor in 1993 is to archaic to represent the state in 2006.
As the article says, the Virginia that Allen knows is fading into history.
