Michael Kelly: Buffett weathers fender bender

BY MICHAEL KELLY

WORLD-HERALD COLUMNIST

From the notebook:

• Warren Buffett traveled all the way to the Middle East and returned safely this week - and then got in an auto accident.

No one was hurt. Damage was slight to his 2006 Cadillac but an estimated $3,200 to the other car.

At 5:43 p.m. Thursday, Buffett was driving west on Leavenworth Street, approaching 40th Street, hungry for burgers after managing his billions. The street was wet, and construction reduced traffic to one lane.

In his rear-view mirror, he saw a car approaching a bit too fast. The famed investor eased his vehicle forward, which softened the blow of the rear-ender.

Annette Pitzer of Omaha was driving a 2002 Mazda Protg. Its front slid under his bumper.

"She was an incredibly nice woman," Buffett said. "She even congratulated me on my recent marriage."

Pitzer, a nursing assistant who was cited for following too close, recognized the second-richest man in the world.

"I said, 'I'm sorry, Mr. Buffett.' He was such a gentleman."

She was meeting friends for dinner at the upscale Regency shopping center. Buffett - this is so Warren - continued down Leavenworth to pick up fast food at Bronco's.

3. I don't get it.
So....A rich dude was in a fender-bender. OK.

Here's the part that leaves my mystified: "Buffett was driving west on Leavenworth Street, approaching 40th Street, hungry for burgers after managing his billions."

WTF?

5. Why is everyone surprised he is a "regular guy?"
From what I understand, he is pretty down to earth for a billionaire.

6. Not surprised he's a "regular guy". I'd never give up a good burger
either. But not everyone's still sharp enough at 76 to drive in D.C. traffic on a good day, much less a rainy evening.

......in their 80s all the time. I remember a sharp 87 year old buying a car. A lot of them would wait till they passed their driving test and celebrate with a new car....scary.

Besides, 70s are the new 50s....LOL

And watch out for seniors taking Ambien and driving first thing in the morning. A Dangerous Combination
