LAT: GOP MAY TIE TORTURE BILL TO WARRANTLESS SURVEILLANCE BILL
Defense Lawyers Assail Legislation on Detainees
The bill faces scrutiny for stripping habeas corpus. Rights groups worry over vagueness.
By Richard Simon and Julian E. Barnes, Times Staff Writers
September 23, 2006

....Congressional Republican leaders, nonetheless, plan to move the compromise military tribunal bill to a vote next week. They may tie the bill, which has support among a number of Democrats, to a more controversial measure authorizing Bush's once-secret warrantless surveillance program.

Legislation introduced by the Senate GOP leadership Friday would make it clear that the president, in some cases, has the authority under the Constitution to unilaterally order surveillance without a judge's approval.

Both the tribunal and surveillance measures are centerpieces of the security-focused agenda the GOP wants to highlight before the November election, which is expected to determine control of Congress....

8. I was thinking attaching it to the wiretapping bill
gives the Dems a terrific out of the corner the tribunals "compromise" put them in.

Maybe I'm just in blue world here, but I can't see many being upset that illegal wiretapping won't be made legal for this adminstration.

6. These bills must be stopped at all costs. These laws violate the very
foundation of our country. The right of Habius Corpus must not be taken away.

7. Oh Yes... a "TwoFer" as they go "Out of Town" for their Campaign Recess
Makes sense to me! Dems will be forced to vote for it. They need to go home and not look weak on DEFENSE!

Best thing is to vote for a "Two-Fer" bill. Saves time and energy for all involved.

We have to hope the Plan is that when Dems take over House and Senate...it can all be done with Amendements that wipe out the whole thing.

But...what if Dems don't manage to take back House and Senate? That's the worry. :scared:
