Boston (Dem) Councilman Sez Demolish Landmark CITGO Sign, Replace w/ FLAG
A giant, neon American Flag.

The Citgo sign is apparently a historic landmark of sorts, like the Pabst Beer Bottle in Newark.

Boston City Council, a collection of affluent Dems who can apparently afford to live in that city, are intensely angry at anyone who would criticize Bush and say the Emperor has no clothes.

I understand the Freedom Forum is already constructing one of those GIANT NEON FLAGS as part of its 10-story high (permanent) television screen they are building in Times Square-er-I mean Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Newseum -- the Museum of Mass Media in DC will have a 10-story high screen facing the street, featuring the visage of our leaders, backed by flags and what-not, with the stories of the day as carried by Gannett corporation, which runs the Freedom Forum.

1. Gotta make certain that capitalism is not threatened now.
Lifeblood of the Homeland, it is. God help that them big bad Republicans should think you are not patriotic enough...or greedy enough.

Puke.

4. No, this guy's an elected city councilman.
One of the ones who killed rent control in Boston, perhaps? Or just one of them "Massholes" that consider themselves the only "red blooded Americans left in the State of Massachusetts"? Not a hard trick considering how much money the guy probably rakes in pretending to be a Democrat.

10. Whoa, whoa, when did they kill rent control?
I must've been out of Boston for too long.

12. Mitt Romney did it. Sucks, don't it?
Homes Not Jails tried to fight it but I think they disbanded up there for sheer lack of affordable housing. (except legacy housing owned by working class folks -- the only folks I know in Boston own their duplex or triplex whatever they call those things.)

But don't think plenty of white Bostonians who saw San Francisco as a good example of real estate appreciation, weren't in favor of ending it. The current mayor, I believe, beat out a working class guy from South Boston on a "let's gentrify Boston" platform. This was all in the late 1990's/early 2000. Same here in DC with Anthony Williams.

Cambrige fought the State/Governor to keep rent control but they banned it statewide. Not just sunset provision, eliminated it outright. Now Boston is the Zurich of the Northeast and no one seems to mind.

3. Citgo wanted to destroy that sign in the 70s
and had allowed a lot of the neon tubes to burn out and create an eyesore. However, it's such an icon over Kendall Square that there was a huge outcry from people in the city and people who'd moved away but who had lived in the city and knew the sign, and it was named an historical landmark and repaired.

I honestly doubt the pigs on the City Council will manage to destroy it now. I think they'll be faced with the same uproar that happened some 30 years ago.

Some things are iconic and worth keeping, no matter how tacky rich men find them.

5. What profiteth a man to gain the world and lose his Citgo?
Nobody cares about the public realm as a place for free and open dialogue anymore.

11. Ahem ... Kenmore Square, not Kendall Square
Kendall Square is now called Cambridge Center, which is, of course, in Cambridge.

14. Sorry, slip of the fingers
and too blind to catch it. I stand corrected.

Kendall was on the other side of the river.

I'll accept my stoning with a bowl of baked beans, one by one.

with the bullshit flag waving. Let's deal with the GOP and Bush before we lose Kenmore Square from another terrorist attack, because these assholes are not protecting us....

Keep it Real!

13. I can't wait to see what channel they display on the 10-story high screen
Here in DC.

It's amazing that we've reached the point where old advertising signs are historic landmarks because they're replacing them with multinational corporate highway signs and 20-foot-tall Dealership Flags, uniform across the landscape.

Do you know they painted over the Chock Full O' Nuts sign in Times Square. The last vestige of old Times Square (besides the Times building itself, that is.) Now its... brace yourself... Juan Valdez Colombian Coffee.

How incredibly stupid.... I love old signs.... most folks do.... they are American icons. These money changers have no vision at all.

15. It's a proven fact that the larger and more numerous the flags,
the more patriotic the people. Or is it "the crappier the banana republic"? I forget. Of course, large flags everywhere will also help wipe out the People Forgetting They're In America problem, thus address a pressing national priority.
