"Illegal aliens" willing to court capture to vote in American elections?
These folks walk across the desert at night, in hopes of not being seen or captured. Sometimes they die from the heat or lack of water. They dig tunnels under fences in order to slip into the USA. Once in, they hide from the cops and authorities. It's a constant struggle for them to remain concealed.

However, the Republicans with their new Voter ID program, seem to think these same people that go to so much effort and trouble to escape from being captured or questioned, are just dying to get in a line at the polling place and cast their vote for a Democrat. Think about it. How many people have crawled across the desert on their knees to escape capture just so they can show up and vote in an American election? This is one of the most ridiculous proposals I have ever heard.

1. I guess when they get here, they'll scour the phone book for the name
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 11:22 PM by Iris
of someone who lives near a polling place, then they'll take a day off of work to go to that polling place and give that name, hoping that the person whose name they are using is registered to vote and if it is they'll go into a booth and vote - UNDER AN ASSUMED NAME!!!!

Omg. what a ridiculous scenario

7. That is a ridiculous scenario,
in my state, we have an estimated 30,000 + illegal migrants with a state issued driver license, they only need to fill out a voter registration form (printed in english and spanish) and the county clerk will happily add their name to the roster so that they can vote at their convenience, the polls are open 7am to 7pm.

8. Does that mean the authorities know where they are already...
..since they have their addresses on their Driver's Licenes? So they could catch them anytime they wanted and send them backa cross the border? What prevents them from doing that?

2. Now Now
Who ever said a republican had good sense. But it really comes down to the fact that they want to try to stop the poor elderly who usually vote democratic. That and only that is what it is all about.

3. Republicans are offering a solution where there is no problem
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 11:25 PM by BattyDem
Which can only mean one thing:
The "solution" is meant to cause a problem - in this case, it will cause the elderly and the poor to be disenfranchised. The bill is about voter suppression - nothing more.

5. it is absurd. They cite the same, debunked "cases" and pretend. . .
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 11:49 PM by pat_k
. . .this demonstrates a problem.

Instead it actually does the opposite. If you have to keep referring to the same 2 or 3 debunked instances of "voter fraud," you've got a very, very big NON-PROBLEM.

4. Lou Dobbs today
Made me so irate with that b.s. He is deliberately choosing to ignore the fact that requiring photo ID will essentially disenfranchise millions of voters. I have yet to see him or others who support this measure subtantiate any incidents of vote fraud by immigrants.

Here in Arizona voters passed an initiative that requires photo ID to vote at the polls and a driver's license to register. The stunning irony of it is that an illegal immigrant can easily obtain a driver's license. Meanwhile, many qualified non-drivers have found themselves unable to vote, due to onerous identification requirements. They actually made it easier for an undocumented alien to vote than many U.S. citizens!
